More Marvel Movies as part of the Brisbane Marvel Exhibition, the Sydney Film Festival Closes, Supanova Sydney and International RPG Day are just some of the stuff to do this weekend across the country!

1Queensland

Wednesday

On Wednesday Night GOMA in Brisbane will be playing Captain America: The Winter Solider and Guardians of the Galaxy back to back. It’s part of the Marvel Exhibition which is on until September so you can buy tickets to the films individually or if you have the fancy deluxe pass you get entry to all the films included.

Have you heard of LARPing? Think tabletop gaming, but without the table… well you can have a table but you will probably hit someone with it (if you have a table made out of Foam). LARPing is Live Action Role Playing and if this is something that you have been interested in on Brisbane‘s southside you can find out more and even give it a try. You may want to find out the rules and about what is a legal weapon first before bringing that LOTR broadsword you picked up at Supanova last year though.

Thursday

What’s in across Australia Cinemas this week? Opening on Thursday we have Despicable Me 3. Yes, the minion merchandising is a little out of hand and we wonder if there is a copyright concern with Ubisoft’s Minions but who doesn’t love a good Supervillain.

Also out on Thursday in limited sessions and cinemas is the Madman distributed Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. We mention Madman because if you were lucky enough to get to the Madman Festival in Brisbane on Sunday night you might have already caught a preview session. Check your favourite local independent cinema near you for sessions.

Friday

Picking up your copy of Warhammer 80k on release day? If you are in Brisbane you can check out Irresistible Force‘s Launch Day event, playing through all of the 7th edition before cracking open the 8th edition at midnight.

Saturday

Love tabletop or just really want to try your hand? Saturday is International Free RPG Day and there are dozens of stores across Australia who are participating! Jump over to the official site and put in your address to find a local store you want to support and get in for some tabletop action.

Have you ever wanted to play Arrow Tag, dressed as Green Arrow before ripping it up with some Karaoke? If you are on the Gold Coast your dreams may come true with an Arrow Tag/Karaoke/Cosplay event this Saturday at Gold Coast Indoor Paintball. There is even an Injustice 2 tournament planned if you don’t want to break character on your beat down.

Sunday

Again at GOMA in Brisbane for the Marvel Exhibition, you can catch a screening of Avengers: Age of Ultron followed by Ant-Man you can grab tickets from GOMA but if you go a little earlier you can see the costumes and props from both movies in the exhibition before you watch!

Also in Movies but at Brisbane‘s Netherworld instead, Two-Bit Cinema Club brings you ‘From the writer behind Highlander and Ladyhawke’ The Blood of Heroes followed by the most expensive movie ever made, at one point, Waterworld. They kick off Sunday night in the Arcade room.

And just to make it 3 in a row for movies in Brisbane and Australia wide Hoyts are starting their Rewind Cinema programme with sessions of Avatar (in 2D) this Sunday. It’s limited sessions and limited screenings but if you have a Hoyts as your local cinema it might be how you want to spend your Sunday afternoon.

2New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

The Sydney Film Festival is upon us and with it a bunch of cool stuff to see but we can’t let you go on without mentioning the Jeff Goldblum VR experience. Let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before the 40th anniversary VR edition of Jurassic Park so why not try out this new method for story telling early. (FYI – If you can’t get to the Wednesday session there is another one on Friday and Saturday).

Thursday

What’s in across Australia Cinemas this week? Opening on Thursday we have Despicable Me 3. Yes, the minion merchandising is a little out of hand and we wonder if there is a copyright concern with Ubisoft’s Minions but who doesn’t love a good Supervillain.

Also out on Thursday in limited sessions and cinemas is the Madman distributed Anime, Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. Check your favourite local independent cinema near you for sessions.

Master of absolutely all the special moves in Street Fighter 2 (or just spam fireballs and hadoukens until the timer runs out)? Sydney‘s 1989 Arcade is kicking off the first in their series of Street Fighter 2 Tournaments this Thursday. While you don’t have to play every week to earn your place in the championship you may want to just to scope out the competition.

Are you a budding Comic Artist looking to meet with others in the industry in Sydney? Do you sometimes partake in drink while you draw? Then you are in luck with the monthly Sydney Drink and Draw on this Thursday.

Friday

Sydney Supanova starts today and runs til Sunday. If you are in Sydney you probably already know this but there is a lot to check out! If you want some pointers check out our creator spotlights for some music, movie and comic suggestions.

Before you head to Supanova in Sydney though, do you have a Star Wars themed cosplay? Because on Friday they are making a stab at a world record for most number of people dressed as Star Wars characters in one location. You can register on the official site but they are also doing it to raise money for the Black Dog Institute for Mental Health as well as Ronald McDonald House!

You didn’t really think there was just one thing on with the Sydney Film Festival, did you? Before we talk new films just a reminder that you can watch the classic American Werewolf in London as part of the SFF at the Skyline Drive-In. You may have missed the only screening on the 6th but this session on Friday is definitely the last.

Also for the SFF in Sydney on Friday (and also on Sunday) you can catch the Sci-Fi thriller OtherLife which revolves around VR (no, not like Lawnmower Man) but if you catch it you can also watch the animated short which is playing with it, Superheroes which may sound like innocent animation but it deals with some dark themes. Do NOT take children to these.

Saturday

Love tabletop or just really want to try your hand? Saturday is International Free RPG Day and there are dozens of stores across Australia who are participating! Jump over to the official site and put in your address to find a local store you want to support and get in for some tabletop action.

Starting Saturday in Sydney and finishing up on Sunday, ESL Australia is hosting the ZEN Esports Network League finals. Hosting teams from Australia, Korea and Indonesia for the first time in a trans-APAC CS:GO eSports competition. Tickets are limited so if you want to watch these times compete for the 50k prize pre-book yours.

The Sydney Film Festival also has something a little bit awesome on Saturday night. Ahead of the TV premiere next month you can catch Episode 1 & 2 of Season Two of Cleverman. If you haven’t watched S1 yet this is probably not an ideal jumping on point but fortunately, all of Season 1 is currently back on iView.

And lastly, also as part of the Sydney Film Festival, you might want to catch the Animated Phantom Boy. It might be French and we have only seen parts but it does give a slight Anime feel.

Sunday

Around Coffs Harbour? Fancy a stroll in your finest cape or cowl? Why not honour Adam West by strapping on your utility belt and doing the Coffs Coast Charity Walk & Super Hero Stride. If you think you can handle the 14km or 21km route to raise money for charity then start looking for sponsors! (*Note the routes do go along a coastline and attendees will need to bring their own Bat-Shark Repellent)

If you are just looking to kick back with a movie on then Australia wide Hoyts are starting their Rewind Cinema programme with sessions of Avatar (in 2D) this Sunday. It’s limited sessions and limited screenings but if you have a Hoyts as your local cinema it might be how you want to spend your Sunday afternoon.

3Victoria & Tasmania

Wednesday

Wednesday night is Trivia night in Melbourne with your choices of Game of Thrones Trivia at the Foresters Pub in Collingwood or Archer Trivia at Island Somewhere. How do you prepare for Archer Trivia you may wonder? Probably with half a dozen gummi bears and some scotch.

Alternatively, if you need more Kevin Bacon for your Wednesday night in Melbourne can we suggest an open air screening of Tremors. If you haven’t seen it, it is glorious but you may want to not be standing on the open ground while watching.

Friday

Can’t get Sempai to notice you? Head to Melbourne‘s BETA Bar Kawaii or Die party on Friday! Your best-themed cosplay gets you perks per usual but you can also win some sweet merch from Madman on the night, so there are plenty of reasons.

Also in Melbourne at the Astor Theatre, the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse double feature hits its 10th Anniversary and there is a special single session of it this Friday night. What this means is, don’t mess about if you want tickets!

Have you been to a Zombie Outbreak at Kryal Castle before? If you have, it’s on again this Friday in Ballarat. If you haven’t and love zombies, then you are really missing out. If you want to go you can still grab some tickets right now, as booking are an absolute need.

Saturday

Love tabletop or just really want to try your hand? Saturday is International Free RPG Day and there are dozens of stores across Australia who are participating! Jump over to the official site and put in your address to find a local store you want to support and get in for some tabletop action.

We are all still pretty upset about the news about Adam West this week but we haven’t forgotten we lost one of the family from Wallace and Gromit last week. Which is why it’s probably well timed that from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon in Melbourne‘s Federation Square you can buy tickets catch a heaping of Aardman films. This is all in place with the ACMI Exhibition that is on this weekend.

Sunday

Are you in Hobart and have been working your thumbs down to nubs playing Tekken 7 since it released the other week it’s time to put those skills to use with Area 52 having it’s first fortnightly Tekken 7 Tournament. It will be PS4 only on the day, so if you have already worked your way through the campaign mode, why not work your way through the local PvP circuit.

Wednesday

Miss out on the last Arduino U at the Perth Artfactory but still have that Arduino you want to learn about? Wednesday it’s on again for your chance to get your start into the world of tinkering! Much like last time, it’s open to members and non-members but you do have to bring your own ready laptop & Arduino.

Can you recite what every Infinity Stone does and who currently has it, not just in the movies but the comics too? Do you know what the Ultimate Nullifier is? Can you tell which X-Men are dead? If you know the last one was a trick question because they are always coming back then you probably will do well at Marvel Trivia at Perth‘s Last Drop Beeliar. It’s free entry but you want to book early else miss your place.

Thursday

What’s in across Australia Cinemas this week? Opening on Thursday we have Despicable Me 3. Yes, the minion merchandising is a little out of hand and we wonder if there is a copyright concern with Ubisoft’s Minions but who doesn’t love a good Supervillain.

If you are looking for a little Anime for your Thursday night in Perth, the Luna Palace Cinemas have one session only/one night only screening of Black Butler the Book of the Atlantic. There is only one chance to go see it here so best grab your tickets before they are gone.

Friday

Have you heard of the Game Sports Bar in Perth? While it may be a sports bar this Friday they are trying something different with their first Level Up at the Game event. This is the first event they have done like this and clearly, they have more planned so why not get in on the ground floor.

Saturday

Love tabletop or just really want to try your hand? Saturday is International Free RPG Day and there are dozens of stores across Australia who are participating! Jump over to the official site and put in your address to find a local store you want to support and get in for some tabletop action.

Sunday

Are you a cosplayer who believes all the best food comes in Trucks? Well, the Superhero Food Truck Night may be aimed towards smaller superheroes but there is nothing saying you can’t get your Superhero Cosplay on and give some of the other patrons a thrill. This just might be the best way to spend your Sunday with your Superhero Cosplay squad in Perth. Plus, there should be no age limit on Food Trucks, Ice Cream or otherwise.
