With Oz Comic Con Brisbane and Sydney coming up, what better time to take 5 with the amazing comic artist Louie Joyce? Louie has been nominated for the Ledger Award for his work on Past the Last Mountain, so why not take 5 and find out more about Louie’s work.
What are reading you right now? The last few weekends I’ve been doing zine fairs and comic events, at which I amassed a large pile of stuff I’ve slowly been making my way through.
Picked up a really great variety of work by Aussie creators like Meg O’Shea, Sam McEwen, Jess Kitty Parker, Craig Thompson and more. I really enjoy Zines because they’re usually nice short stories told in interesting or unique ways (both in terms of the drawings and the comic itself). They always inspire me with creative energy, which is fantastic!
Who or what is Past the Last Mountain? Why is it important? Past the Last Mountain is 4 issue mini-series released in 2016 through Comics Experience.
It takes place in a world very similar to our own, but in which fantasy creatures exist and they don’t always get along with humans. It follows a troll, faun and dragon on the run from the United States government in a story that, at its heart, is about family and what lengths we’ll go to to protect our own.
It’s written by Paul Allor, with layouts by Gannon Beck and art & colours by myself. And it’s just been shortlisted for a 2017 Ledger Award which is incredibly exciting!!
All 4 issues are available on ComiXology and we recently kickstarted a print edition that includes a bunch of extras which will be available later in the year.
Apart from your book what should everyone be looking out for in local Australian Pop Culture? Home Time Book One by Campbell Whyte, which I believe is out in August through Top Shelf. I just discovered Campbell’s work recently and he’s already one of my fave artists. Home Time looks amazing and incredibly charming. Highly recommend checking it out!
Major prediction for Pop Culture 12 months from now? Aquamania is going to take over the world!!! I’ve been saying it for years and finally, everyone’s gonna be in the same boat. Aquaman is King!
Best last thing you ate? My wife is an amazing cook so the answer to this question is generally the last thing she made. I also had some amazing sushi at a new sushi joint that’s opened nearby, which is great because we’ve been severely lacking in the sushi department down south.
And that’s 5! You can catch Louie Joyce in Artist Alley at Oz Comic Con Brisbane and Sydney this month and maybe pick up some books. If you aren’t headed to Brisbane or Sydney, jump over to Comixology to pick up his Ledger Award shortlisted book (or watch out for the Kickstarter to support a print edition one)
