OzComicCon returns to Melbourne for 2018, The Last Starfighter in Perth, the final season of Sense8 on Netflix and the Battle of the Arcades across Australia. All this and more is happening this long weekend (for those getting a long weekend) all over Australia for this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Thursday

In cinemas this week catch the 4th movie in the series of a remake of a 1960’s Rat Pack film with Ocean’s 8. This one does not have George Clooney but instead Sandra Bullock as his sister. We don’t know much about this but given the numbering we assume it only leaves space for 2 sequels before Ocean’s 5: Infinity War.

Also on Thursday for a limited run only for Anime fans, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms is the first feature film directed by screenwriter Mari Okada. While not quite the same as some of her previous Gundam screen writing this tale of an being with the lifespan of hundreds of years adopting a human baby and raising him. It’s playing at the Brisbane Event Cinemas this Thursday and through the weekend in Brisbane.

Friday

Looking for some medieval based action for your long weekend?Starting Friday and running through to Monday, the Great Northern War XIX is a medieval faire within 20 minutes drive of Brisbane CBD. With Jousting, Archery and Knight’s in full combat as part of the flame tournament it has everything a young squire or maiden would want.

There is more than meets the eye on Foxtel this weekend with a Pop-up channel starting on Friday playing every Michael Bay Transformers back to back. With 5 movies having graced the big screen and a Bumblebee standalone still planned for release at the end of the year, it’s OK if it is your guilty pleasure. Though we think they need more Stan Bush in their soundtracks.

Also on Friday the second and final season of the Wachowski’s Sci-Fi series, Sense8 comes to Netflix. It’s not often that a series gets cancelled but you still get a final season to wrap up, but that is exactly what we are getting with the final 10 episodes ready for you to binge on Friday. Good guy Netflix.

If you want to head out then the Palace Cinemas in Brisbane have some Kubrick for your Friday night. The Palace Cinemas have one session only of the original 2001 playing in 70mm film, playing only at the Fortitude Valley Palace Cinema and only for the weekend – see why the original has been described as every frame a picture.

Saturday

This Saturday and Sunday if you love LEGO you will want to make time to check out BrisBricks LEGO Fan event in Brisbane. With massive displays of Wayne Manor and an even bigger Hogwarts all to raise for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, jump over to the official site and book your tickets for a session this weekend.

On Saturday the Brisbane Palace Cinemas continue their flashback family movie programme with The Lion King. While a live action version is on the way you can catch the original and the best this weekend.

History Alive is the annual Fort Lytton re-enactment festival covering everything from Crusader Knights to WWII. Need more? Buying a ticket can earn you a chance to fire the Fort’s Cannons. So join the 600+ re-enactors this Saturday and Sunday in Brisbane.

Hit the Arcade with a brand new Arcade opening in Toowoomba this Saturday. iPlay Toowoomba is open to the public this Saturday, and as an opening promotion any credits you buy for an iPlay game card that you can use on the machines will be doubled. Buy $50 and get $100, and better yet credits are valid for 12 months so you don’t even have to use them all on the day!

Also in Arcades, Battle of the Arcades begins this Saturday and Brisbane‘s Netherworld is the venue for you to qualify to represent your state. Check the Netherworld event page for the full details and make sure you get some practice in before qualifiers.

Sunday

If you didn’t qualify to represent in your local Battle of the Arcades team (or maybe you did), this Sunday you can watch the finals and support your team at Brisbane‘s 1Up Arcade, Pincadia and Netherworld in person or online via the official Stream.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

Sydney Film Festival Starts this Wednesday. Running for the next two weeks across the festival has a ton of independent and short films including some previews of new films like the excellent Upgrade (our review is coming out next week) and previews of shows like the SBS/Fox Deep State with Sherlock Holmes/Kingsman’s Mark Strong.

Bordercon is a 4 day long gaming con for Strategy and Designer games on the Albury-Wodonga border. Kicking off on Friday and running through to Monday as part of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend for you to game your weekend away.

The Karma Keg comes to Willie the Boatman raising money for The Kids Brain Cancer Fund. That isn’t all with this being a Pirate Fundraiser so Pirate Talk and outfits are encouraged. It’s not required but it will make it a lot more fun. It’s on this Friday in Sydney.

Saturday

On Saturday the Canberra and Sydney Palace Cinemas continue their flashback family movie programme with The Lion King. While a live action version is on the way you can catch the original and the best this weekend.

Battle of the Arcades begins this Saturday and Sydney‘s 1989 Arcade, Bar and Kitchen is the venue for you to qualify to represent your state. Check the 1989 Arcade event page for the full details and make sure you get some practice in before qualifiers.

Need an awesome classic movie for your Saturday night in Sydney? As you wish with The Princess Bride at the Palace Nova Cinema! This is a single late night session for all those Inigo Montoya fans starting at 9:30 PM. Is there a better movie for a Saturday night? Inconceivable!

And lastly, didn’t get enough Pirate life on Friday? Continue with the Shanties and Rum at Pirate Night at Sydney‘s Spawn Point. Search for rum, talk like a pirate and search for treasure all at this free event.

Sunday

3. Victoria & Tasmania

Wednesday

This Wednesday at the Cinema Nova in Melbourne thanks to MonsterFest, see an advanced screening of the Australian made Occupation. Already shown as part of MonsterFest in Brisbane and a sneak preview on the Gold Coast, there is only one session so make sure you pick up your ticket from the Cinema Nova site.

For all things Celtic head to the National Celtic Festival at Portarlington South of Melbourne. This 4 day long event starting Friday celebrates all things Celtic with over 15,000 guests expected.

OzComicCon 2018 hits Melbourne this Saturday and Sunday! This year with tons of TV guests from Riverdale to Lucifer on top of all the awesome cosplay and vendors you know and love, you don’t really need us to tell you that you want to go.

Sunday

If you didn’t qualify to represent in your local Battle of the Arcades team (or maybe you did), this Sunday you can watch the finals and support your team at Melbourne‘s Pixel Alley in person or online via the official Stream.

And finally Tasmanian Force of Will players, Sunday is your chance at the official state qualifiers at Area 52 in Hobart. If you are a skilled player or just someone who wants to pickup some tickets to improve your own card game, you can do both this weekend.

4. South Australia & Northern Territory

Wednesday

Quiet night this Wednesday in NT/SA? Why not enjoy it while you can and catch up with your binging or maybe find something new in gaming to play.

You might have missed out on Battle of the Arcades in South Australia but Sunday is all about Arcades in Adelaide. Ultracade is a massive music and gaming one day event with DJs and Retro Gaming, celebrating everything from Arkanoid to Zelda with a collection of hardware from 20 years of gaming history.

Want to go to a singles night but just can’t find one that couples your love of Pokemon with your quest looking for love? Respawn in Perth are here to help you with their Pokemon Singles Night this Friday. Charizard Red means you are not interested, Pikachu Yellow means it’s complicated and Venusaur Green is single and ready to mingle. Sadly, there is no love for Bulbasaur. Poor Bulbasaur.

Saturday

Battle of the Arcades begins this Saturday and Perth‘s Player 1 is the venue for you to qualify to represent your state. Check the Player 1 event page for the full details and make sure you get some practice in before qualifiers.

After you have finished saving Perth at Player 1, head to The Backlot to save Rylos in The Last Starfighter. One of the first movies to feature CGI, this is the original ‘win a computer game, save the galaxy’ tale that so many others have since followed and a must see for anyone who hasn’t.
