We all know that Australia produces some of the best filmmakers and actors out there, but we have yet to see a true blockbuster Aussie alien invasion film. That is all about to change! Special effects? Check! A cast of veteran sci-fi actors? Check! A film about small-town Australians facing down an alien invasion? Now that’s what we are talking about! So take 5 with Luke Sparke, the writer and director of the upcoming film Occupation.

What are you playing/reading/watching right now?
Westworld season 2 on TV, Battlefront 2 on Xbox & just finished reading ‘George Lucas, A life’.

What is Occupation? Why is it important?
Occupation is an Alien invasion film but focused for the first time on Australia. This small dying country town and a group of people that probably wouldn’t be friends if this huge event didn’t occur. it’s about how they come together as a family and decide to fight back.

Alien invasions are nothing new, but it was a great backdrop to tell the story of these people and their small fight to survive. I’m interested in throwing characters together and see how they get out or how they react. It’s very interesting and organic.

On the other side of the film, it’s great to bring a epic sense of scale to the Aussie cinema. Designing these Aliens, ships, why are they here… it’s been great fun but tremendous hard work. We have some of the best actors and crew in the world and I think it’s been a thrill for them to work on something this scale that is undeniably Australian.

I was so lucky to pull such a great cast together with this film. Some fantastic actors with pop culture cred , such as Tem Morrison (Star Wars) Stephany Jacobsen (Battlestar Galactica) Charles Measure (Once upon a time) Rhiannon Fish (The 100) Bruce Spence (Mad Max) Jacqueline McKenzie (The 4400). it was like a dream come true after being a fan of all those shows. Then to supplement that with the rest of the incredible cast… amazing! I hope the Australian public gets out there and backs the film! We’ve got more to tell with these characters!

Apart from your film what should everyone be looking out for in local Australian Pop Culture? There’s some great stuff in Aussie comics by the guys over at the Dark Oz and Decay team. Some interesting independent films coming out from talented film makers. It’s great to see we are at a time where Aussie film makers can kick down doors and create something themselves. Everyone should be supporting film makers or creatives who can do that. We might be able to build a very interesting, new and exciting local industry in the near future.

Major prediction for Pop Culture 12 months from now? Twelve months from now I’ll know what happens in Avengers 4 – so that will be great! I think this year will be very interesting for the Australian film / TV landscape. Perhaps in a year Netflix will be agreeing to content quotas out here. A very interesting twelve months!

Best last thing you ate? Got to go with Chocolate Eclairs! Love ’em

And that’s 5! You can find out more about Occupation online and like the film on Facebook for future updates. The film will be screening as part of the Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow with an advance premier screening in Brisbane on the Friday May 25th!
