From Marvel Movie Exhibits to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Towel Day, if you want to spend your weekend watching movies and TV or going out we got you covered with our guide to what is happening across Australia in geekdom.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

Did you binge watch all of 13 Reasons Why in the last week or two? You might find this hard to believe but in the Beach Burrito in Brisbane‘s Fortitude Valley is having a 13 Reasons Why Trivia night on Wednesday, consider it an opportunity to release everything you absorbed.

Thursday

Happy Towel Day! Thursday is the International day for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, so wherever you go today don’t forget your towel! (p.s. Want to blow your mind and learn why 42 is the answer the ultimate question of life the universe and everything? Check out what 42 on the ASCII table is)

Also, Thursday is the day for the Cancer Council’s biggest morning tea! Short version, have scones for charity! Long version, host or attend a morning tea event and raise money to fight Cancer! For more details check the biggest morning tea website and find a morning tea, or host your own!

In cinemas from Thursday across Australia the 5th Pirates of the Carribean movie is released – Dead Men Tell No Tales. Is it the end? Is that just marketing? Where did the rum go? All these answers are probably in the movie.

If you aren’t sure where to see Pirates 5 and you are in Brisbane and like a little pre-movie trivia can we suggest the New Farm Cinema who is having a pre-pirates free trivia before the sessions on Thursday.

Are you a Comic Book artist in Brisbane? Do you like to Drink and Draw? You might want to go to the Drink & Draw event at Grill’d in the CBD Winter Garden. This isn’t the first one of these events but you can meet with fellow artists on the local scene and maybe plan some future collabs.

If you have committed every Adam Sandler movie to memory (Jeeze, remember Little Nicky?) then all that is going to be paying off as Man vs Bear trivia is having an Adam Sandler trivia night at Brisbane‘s Brightside. Tickets for all Man vs Bear events are SUPER limited so don’t delay if you want to get along.

Thursday are pretty busy for movies but if you want to watch some Anime the Japanese Animation and Manga Meetup group are having a mini-anime marathon at the Carindale Library in Brisbane.

And finally, something non-movie related for your Thursday at the Jubilee Hotel in Brisbane you can play in their Super Smash Bros. Tournament. Playing two tournaments on both Wii-U and in Melee mode make for a lot of Super Smash Bros. action to have on a Thursday night.

Friday

For mature audiences who enjoy their burlesque with more nerd in it, Curves & Claws Burlesque have their Nerdlesque Special this Friday in Brisbane‘s Fortitude Valley in the Global Theatre. Tickets are a must if you want to get to this one night only event!

If you are still looking for the Rum by Friday and on the Gold Coast the rum is at Captain Morgan’s Pirate Party in Hope Island! It goes without saying that cosplay and shanties you learnt from playing Black Flag over and over again are obligatory, but we secretly hopeful for one person who saw Muppet Treasure Island when they pick their parrot.

If Friday night movies are what you are looking for then Event Cinema’s In The House season continues with the Kurt Russell classic – Escape from New York. If you have never seen Snake Plissken before then you probably will have your next cosplay planned after watching this.

And lastly in Brisbane, if you missed out on some Smash Bros. on Thursday you can try again on Friday at the Guf in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley for their Smash Bros. tournament. While not mandatory it is worth bringing your own Wii-U/3DS setup.

Saturday

We have been looking forward to this since it was announced last year, GOMA in Brisbane opens doors on the MARVEL: Creating the Cinematic Universe Exhibition! The Exhibition runs from the 27th of May until the 3rd of September so there is plenty of time to grab tickets & check it out. We will be going to a preview night on Friday so watch out on our social media!

Also Marvel themed at in the Brisbane Queen St Mall, to promote the exhibit & launch of a range of Marvel apparel by UNI QLO is a Meet Your Favourite Marvel Character event. Can you go in your own cosplay? We don’t know but if you pose with any of the cosplayers who are at the event and hashtag it then you can get a polaroid of it printed.

And one more in Brisbane CBD for Saturday if you are looking for a group of like-minded individuals to play games with, StreetPass Brisbane is having their May meetup at the Brisbane Square Library. Pretty good if you were looking for someone to play Mario Kart 8 with!

Alternatively, if Saturday was made for retro gaming then the brand new 1up Arcade in Brisbane is having an 80s night. You don’t even need a pocket full of coins with all machines being freeplay for just a single entry price. Just the thing for anyone who wants to get their last starfighter on while listening to A-Ha.

If you want to be in a galaxy far far away you can join the QLD 501st Legion as they have their 8th year at Dreamworld. Expect to see lots of Stormtroopers puking in their helmets as they go one too many times on the rollercoasters! (Added bonus, don’t forget the LEGO store is at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast.

If you have been short on time travelling sci-fi then Season 3 of 12 Monkeys starts on Foxtel on Saturday. If you haven’t seen it this probably isn’t the best jumping on point but the first 2 seasons are on Netflix (and yes it’s based on that Bruce Willis/Brad Pitt movie, but it’s actually pretty good).

And just for something a little bit different on your weekend if you are near the NSW/QLD border with V8 Jetboat racing. Tiny 2 person boats going around very shallow water tracks in front of an audience. Think Rally Car racing, but with boats! It’s happening this Saturday & Sunday with tickets available online.

Sunday

If you are on the Gold Coast and need an excuse to cosplay the Carrara Markets are having a Cosplay Parade this Sunday. Yes there are prizes on offer but aren’t you just looking forward to being able to cosplay on a cool day?

And rounding out your weekend in Brisbane as part of the Marvel exhibit at GOMA every Marvel movie will be playing at the GOMA theatre starting with The Avengers. You can buy tickets for sessions individually or a pass to see every movie but tickets are a must.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

If you are in Sydney, then Playtime is opening their new Arcade with a VIP event in Chatswood! It’s a limited ticket event before the arcade is open to the general public so dont worry if you miss out you can always check it out tomorrow. We said it was limited, with tickets already being sold out! But don’t worry it’s only the opening with the arcade being open to the general public the following day.

Saturday

Anyone in Sydney‘s West might want to head to Oran Park for Oran Con 3, the Mini-Con with a big heart. It has everything the big cons have with cosplay, stalls and guests, just in a more convenient travel size.

If you feel that the thing lacking at most parties is the lack of Disney music and the ability to wear pyjamas then you will want to be at the Spawn Point Small Bar in Sydney for the Disney Pyjama Party!

Mixing in a little action in on your Saturday night in Canberra with some Roller Derby! It’s Brindabelters vs Surly Griffins and sadly we don’t know that much about Roller Derby, but it sounds pretty awesome!

Sunday

First, if you are in Canberra and have been looking for a SFX workshop then you might want to check out the KP Makeup Artistry workshop on Sunday. This is not a free event so you might want to check the conditions and costs before enrolling but you do get a take home kit and learn how to make many awesome effects.

Also in Canberra on Sunday at the Reload Bar, Impact Comics are having their monthly comic meetup and this month it’s to discuss Planetary Vol 1. If you have never read it there is still plenty of time to go grab a copy before Sunday (it’s pretty good!)

If you need some more Doctor Who and missed out on the last Sydney tickets to Whovians the Doctor Who Club of Australia is having a Cyberman themed event with a special guest appearance by Josh Campbell, a producer who worked on restoring the missing episodes recently.
