What’s On: May 3 – 7

This is it. The big one. The one you have been training all year for. With both Star Wars Day and Free Comic Book Day being on in the same week, you are going to need more than hokey religion and ancient weapons to get through it all.

This is going to be our longest ‘What’s on’ ever! You can scroll across to your state to find out what is happening there – So watch me for the changes, and try and keep up!

1. Queensland

If you go to UQ in Brisbane you might already know the video game clubs are joining forces to host an Epic Video Game/Pizza Party under the stars! Tickets are available now for all you can eat pizza and Red Bull, but you will need to supply your own controllers & picnic blankets.

Happy Star Wars Day! There is a lot to cover, so let’s do this thing!

  • Brisbane‘s Netherworld becoming a wretched hive of scum and villainy with Star Wars Pinball, Star Wars themed beers and Cosplay Competitions for the night.
  • The Brightside also in Brisbane wants to find out if you know the difference between TK-421 & a T-16 with Man vs Bear running a Star Wars Trivia night.
  • If you are in the mood for just some music and food both Brisbane Bar’s The Milk Factory and Prohibition are throwing Star Wars Parties
  • If you can’t decide between parties, cosplay and trivia the Fox in South Brisbane is doing it all as well as auctioning off a First Order Helmet replica (worth $500) all benefiting the Children’s Cancer Foundation
  • Brisbane QUT eSports Members (or even if you go to QUT and register on the night) will be having a Battlefront II night. No not the upcoming release, the classic Lucasarts Games title.
  • Even the Cat Cafe in Brisbane is offering Star Wars themed cat prints if you need to cuddle some kitties!!

If you know the name Inigo Montoya you will want to get to the Princess Bride/Dirty Dancing double feature at the Metro Arts Cinema in Brisbane. Because nobody puts Baby in the corner.

Alternatively, if you are awesome at Super Smash Bros and just want to meet new people the Guf in Fortitude Valley are hosting a Smash Bros Comp. A small entry fee will get you in this round robin competition to show off your Smash Bros. Wii U skills.

If you have ever gotten away with killing a colonel named after a condiment with a lead pipe in a study you probably already have tickets for Cluedo on the Kookaburra Queen on the Brisbane River. This is a sold out event but if you missed out on the Creator Spotlight this week with one of the creators, maybe check it out to find out how to get tickets for the next one.

For anyone who has had a life-long dream of dressing like a Jedi and going rollerskating but just hasn’t found an excuse the Epic Skate Rink at Tweed Heads is hosting a Star Wars Skating Weekend starting off on Friday aka Revenge of the 5th and running until Sunday.

And if you just want to stay in and find something to binge then Season 2 of Sense8 is out on Netflix.

Happy Free Comic Book Day! Just about every comic store across the country has something on today. If you don’t know what Free Comic Book Day is, check out our awesome FCBD Guide for more info including what comics will be available.

Comic Empire in Brisbane will have Wayne Nicols signing comics in store & free Halo comic grading in addition to indie comic creator Cameron Davis. Ace Comics are also supporting FCBD and will have some local comic creators and artists in store for the day. Ace, Comics Empire & Secret ID Comics in Brisbane are also participating in the Future Fan Project, if you want to make a last minute comic donation.

After FCBD you can head over to Netherworld who are teaming up with Comics Etc for a FCBD afterparty. They just got a new Walking Dead Pinball in so there is a fat bar tab and a Walking Dead statue up for grabs to celebrate.

Not Star Wars or Comic related but if you love the musical scores of Pirates of the Carribean, Sherlock Holmes and the Dark Knight to name a few you may have heard the name, Hans Zimmerman. Touring the country with the second show in Brisbane you can still grab tickets if you can afford them.

If Comics aren’t your thing but eSports is, the Intel Extreme Masters is on at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. While this isn’t in Brisbane it will be streamed live via ESL Australia if you need to see some CS:GO action and prepare for the next IEM tournament.

And for those who just want to unwind with something that is a cross between American Horror Story and the Twilight Zone Foxtel will be (finally) airing Channel Zero: Candle Cove on the SyFy channel. If you know what Creepypasta is then you were probably already holding out for this.

If you need to unwind the Guf again in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane will have the 19th round of a Street Fighter V tournament on Sunday. It is open to all comers who want to pay the entry fee to share in the cash prize.

Two-Bit Cinema continues at Netherworld in Brisbane on Sunday with a Richie Rich / Blank Cheque double feature. As usual Ben McLeay of SBS Comedy will host and try to explain why these two got snubbed at the 1994 Oscars.
