From the World Escape Room Qualifiers in Melbourne to NexusCon in Coffs Harbour to the next season of Marvel/Netflix to binge there is tons happening this weekend to keep you busy across Australia in this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

First up we are officially in Super Hero Week! Starting Monday and running through to Sunday is the national week raising money for Muscular Dystrophy. Think of it like Red Nose Day but with Utility Belts and Capes. Check the Super Hero Week site for more details and how you can have your own event at your work this week.

On Wednesday a double feature as part of Event Cinemas In The House with a screenings of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal and Bowie in Labyrinth! They are playing across Queensland in Event Cinemas on the Gold Coast at Pacific Fair & Southport, CairnsIpswichTownsvilleSunshine Coast Maroochydore cinemas, ToowoombaMackay and Brisbane‘s Loganholme, Myer Centre, Chermside and Garden City Event Cinemas. And just a reminder every In The House this season is playing on Wednesday and Monday nights in case you want to start your weekend even earlier.

Thursday

This Thursday in cinemas is for anyone who was waiting for the horror version of Sister Act 2 when The Nun is released. Demonic possessed nuns, priests sent from the Vatican, a remote church in Romania, nope nothing could possible go wrong with that combination.

Friday

Friday on Netflix gets you Season 2 of Marvel’s Iron Fist. Largely excluded from the events of Infinity War we can’t help but be a little curious about any mention, and you can find out too when it becomes binge-able from Friday.

Starting Friday on the Sunshine Coast is a 3-Day Mega Pinball championship event for the Noosa Festival of Pinball. This is the biggest and first Pinball multi-day event on the Sunshine Coast and it is being held at the brand new Land & Sea brewery. Saturday

Need to top up your LEGO supplies on Saturday? Try BrickResales event in Brisbane with only a gold coin on entry which goes to RizeUp, an organisation supporting the many families affected by domestic and family violence, you can feed your LEGO addiction and earn some karma all at once!

Up your skills as part of Netherworld’s Arcade Club with Galaga. Learn the tips and tricks to master the vertical shooter before an 8 game tournament to earn one of the coveted Netherworld Pins. It’s on Saturday in Brisbane.

Sunday

Get in touch with your inner Viking for Viking Culture Day happening at Mount Tambourine in the Gold Coast hinterland. With Viking battles, heroic combat, blacksmithing, and all sorts of battle by the end of Sunday you should be able to pickup Mjolnir.

And wrapping up your Sunday at Brisbane‘s Netherworld for Two-Bit Cinema Club and a Gremlins/Critters double feature. Don’t worry it will finish before midnight so you can feed your inner monster.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Need to get out of the house on Friday? If you are in Canberra pickup some tickets for the best worst movie ever made with The Room. So bad that another award winning movie was made based on it’s making you can watch the original at the Limelight Cinema for this special licensed and catered event making it more of a party than just a 15th anniversary screening.

And finally for Friday in Sydney, dont forget about the XBOX/Forza Drive-In event at Blacktown Drive-In. Tickets will be limited.

Saturday

NexusCon is Coffs Harbour‘s own regional Pop Culture Con and it’s happening for 2018 this Weekend! Previously known as LevelUp the con is in it’s 4th year and growing with everything you love including Comic and Cosplay Guests, local vendors and a few special extras this year. Grab your tickets online or at the door for Saturday.

Sunday

Hobbits, Ents, Orcs, Elves and Dwarves should head again to the Limelight in Canberra for an epic Lord of the Rings movie marathon with The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King playing back to back and all in the extended editions starting at 10:30 AM sharp. You can get tickets for all 3 films or just your favourite but make sure you dress appropriately with cosplay encouraged.

3. Victoria & Tasmania

Do you have razor sharp puzzle solving skills when it comes to escape rooms? Want to see what it takes to be World Championship material? This Wednesday in Melbourne at RMIT University you can see teams of 4 as they compete in the Australian qualifiers for the World Escape Room Championship. It’s open for all 18+ teams of 4 with qualifiers this week on Wednesday and Thursday only.
