If you are in Brisbane enjoy your Ekka Holiday (if you have the day off). If you are going to the Ekka, after you pick up your Nerf showbag drop into Netherworld for the Netherworld Sideshow! With showbags and carnie food it’s the perfect after-Ekka venue.

Outta the Box Anime Festival season 3 continues with a screening of Howl’s Moving Castle. Considered one of the most well known Studio Ghibli films you can see it at Brisbane‘s Myer Centre Event Cinemas exclusively this Wednesday.

Happy Roller Coaster Day Everybody! Not near a theme park or other Roller Coaster? Dust off your copy of Roller Coaster Tycoon! Find a cardboard box and a hill or some stairs! (Actually probably not that last one, might be a bit unsafe).

This week in cinemas catch Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in the Spike Lee film BlacKkKlansman or the massive shark movie with soon to be Batwoman Ruby Rose in The Meg. Both are out in cinemas across the country from Thursday.

If you want to get out of the house on Friday then the Great Detective series continues at Brisbane‘s GOMA with Se7en. This dark thriller  with vintage Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman is a must for anyone who doesn’t know what’s in the box. Pickup tickets online or at the box office.

Flex your knowledge of the MCU at the Brightside in Brisbane this Friday for Marvel Cinematic Universe Trivia. If you know anything about the Brightside Trivia then you know these book out fast so Assemble your Avengers and book your place now.

Saturday

Looking for some Science Week action this weekend? Then look no further than the Electric Car Rally at the Rail Museum in Ipswich. With all manner of electric vehicles including bikes and buggies at this free event on Saturday.

Continuing with the GOMA’s Great Detective series in Brisbane, before he was Master of the Mystic Arts as Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch was Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series by Doctor Who Showrunner Steven Moffat. One of the best versions of Sherlock Holmes and you can watch the first movie length episode ‘A Study in Pink’ on Saturday. Oh, and it’s free.

For gamers the GO423 is a one day event celebrating everything happening with local creators. On at the Brisbane Powerhouse expect everything interactive and there is even a gard game making workshop with it being absolutely free to attend but for one day only.

Netherworld’s Sideshow culminates this Saturday for the Ultimate Denizen. This multi-game event looks for the best of the best across all games at Brisbane‘s Netherworld. Show your speed on the racing games, accuracy with a plastic blaster on top of a gauntlet of arcade games but only the best will be crowned the Ultimate Denizen with a loss in any one skill dropping you out of the running. Neko Nation returns to Brisbane on Saturday in the travelling party for anyone who enjoys all things anime and manga. This dance party with DJs specialising in music from anime, video games, k-pop and more. Don’t miss out on the mega-anime party this weekend.

Sunday

Sunday the biggest Retro Video Gaming Market in Brisbane returns once again and this weekend it’s at the 1Up Arcade! If you are looking for anything from Atari 2600 right up to now (plus some pretty cool art to put your favourite game in) you can find it here this weekend.

Sunday is also the last day to catch advanced screenings of the Anime Mirai playing at Brisbane‘s Elizabeth Street Cinemas. Playing both Saturday and Sunday, Mirai is follows a 4-year old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family, until things turn magical.

It’s week 2 of the 3 week Artworld Videogames exhibition at the Bar SK in Melbourne. This exhibition celebrates media and experimental games and is co-sponsored by ACMI + RMI University. This Thursday is the opening night for this week’s featured artist Nicole He who’s work will be on display until next Tuesday.

And finally for National Science Week the Melbourne IMAX is playing the 3D 20th Anniversary edition of Jurassic Park. This special one off screening will be introduced by Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology Dr Erich and Vertebrate Palaeontologist Dr Stephen will talk about how our understanding of dinosaur palaeobiology is dramatically different from 1993 when the original Jurassic Park movie was released.

Sunday is also the final day of the Melbourne International Film Festival. With still a few films playing on the full schedule but our pick is the second and last ‘Hear with my eyes‘ performance of the Ryan Gosling Drive. Supported by local independent musicians playing the soundtrack for the film this is definitely a unique experience.
