Looking for something to do this weekend? If you aren’t heading to Adelaide for the excellent AVCon this weekend there is still plenty to do and watch, from Adam West Batman to Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

1. Queensland

Wednesday

On Wednesday the Queensland Film Festival starts in Brisbane (well technically it started on the 13th) and while there are plenty of international flavours to make you feel cultured we want to suggest you might be interested in The Endless. Part Horror, Part Sci-Fi but the comparison to Primer (one of our top 5 all time time travel movies) sold it for us.

Also in Brisbane, GOMA is still playing all the MCU as part of their awesome Marvel Exhibition (seriously, it’s awesome. Go see it). This Wednesday you can see Iron Man 3 and Doctor Strange at the GOMA Cinema. Grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

Thursday

Happy Space Exploration Day!!! How should you celebrate? Outside of getting your Spaceman Spiff on you should find out when the sessions at your local Planetarium are on, or even drag your own telescope out for a look at the night sky! Why? Because Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

What else happens on Thursday? Well there are not a lot of new movies out (except for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk) but we would be remiss to not mention that SDCC starts over in the US and you can watch it here. Checkout our full guide to watching SDCC for more details.

Are you familiar with Halfbrick Studios? The Brisbane based games studio behind stuff like Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja? If you are then you can get the chance to play a bunch of their existing games + some as yet unseen ones this Thursday at Netherworld as they play host. Meet the devs, play the games, have the beers!

Friday

Before you head out on your Friday night you might want to tune into SBS Viceland as they start playing every episode of the original Adam West Batman at 6:30 pm in double episodes! This starts on Friday and continues every Friday, same Bat-Time same Bat-Channel (and on SBS On Demand after the complete run has aired).

If you are in an art appreciation mood in Brisbane on Friday then Ashcan Comics are opening an exhibition of over 150 pages by local comic artists which will run until Sunday. All pages will be up for sale as well if you are looking for something local and comic book art to adorn your walls.

Pinball Wizards will be at The Mill on Constance from Friday as the 2017 Annual Brisbane Masters pinball competition kicks off to run all weekend. If you have been working the machines hard at Netherworld there may be still time to register for some of the events with others already full of IFPA ranked players, check the full details via the event page.

Saturday

Need weekend plans in Maryborough? FraserPop is on this Saturday and Sunday for the first time ever in the region! If you are in the area or maybe a small drive away make sure you get across to support this local con so it can come back bigger and better every year!

In Brisbane but if you need some more science fiction then Conquest 2017 is a free event with speakers/authors, auctions & raffles, art, games + the usual stores. If you like a bit of Sci-Fi and want to know more about what is out in the local scene, or just go for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer panel, it’s on this Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday

SPAAAAAACE! If that got your attention then you might be interested to know Neil deGrasse Tyson is touring Australia and New Zealand and this Sunday will be at Brisbane‘s Southbank Piazza. You can pick-up tickets from the official tour site.

With the end of the Ashcan Comics art exhibition in Brisbane from Friday on Sunday, the space will be transformed into a comic market where exhibiting artists will also have their full publications and some prints for sale. If you want to support local comics this is a pretty good way to do it.

If you are a fan of Evangelion then you will want to be at Event Cinemas for the Evangelion marathon that starts on Thursday and runs every night until the following Wednesday. BUT on Sunday there is a special Theatrical Edition which is playing all 3 back to back. It is only in limited event cinemas but you can find out which ones and pick-up tickets (or find out more details about the individual sessions) via the Event Cinemas website.

If you didn’t get to the Brisbane GOMA MCU movie sessions on Wednesday then on Sunday you can catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 & 2. But maybe you shouldn’t… I dont know if you can handle that much Baby Groot in a single session. Seriously you could die from cuteness overload. Grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

And wrapping things up on Sunday in Queensland back for the last day of the Queensland Film Festival in Brisbane we want to tell you about The Lure. If the phrase “mermaid musical that merges sex, comedy, death and dance sequences” makes you happy then you will want to enter to win a double pass that we are giving away thanks to QFF!

Got some holes in your anime collection? Anime at Abbotsford is having another anime market day and its on this Saturday in Sydney. If you have never been there are multiple vendors so you are likely to find what you are after, providing it’s something anime’y.

Sunday

By the Power of Greyskull you should get to the 1989 Arcade Bar in Sydney for Alan Smithee’s Cult Film Club, this week? Masters of the Universe. Possibly the greatest Dolph Lundgren movie followed by The Punisher. Disagree? Head to the Film Club and discuss!
