What’s your name & how old are you? I’m Siera, and I’ve just recently turned 30 :0

How long have you been cosplaying? I’ve been cosplaying since 2006/7, so coming up to 13 years now!

What inspired you to start cosplaying? Prior to cosplay, I’d been interested in anime and lolita fashion, and had been making some of my own lolita dresses and skirts as the fashion wasn’t very accessible for an Australian student in the mid-2000’s. It was from lolita that I saw some overlaps with cosplay, and took that as my next challenge, so it was a really natural progression from that, and I’m very grateful to my mum for having taught me to sew!

What was your First Cosplay? Technically, my first attempt was Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden in 2006. But I was quite inexperienced and very ambitious. I was also attempting to make Souseiseki for a friend so we could match, and doing all sorts of things like paper mache-ing shoes, ruffling material with elastic, and definitely using the cheapest fabric that a student could find! Unfortunately, the costume that I made for my friend didn’t fit, and I felt so self-conscious that as soon as I got to the convention, I went into the bathroom and changed out of the costume – it wasn’t a good feeling at all!

The following year, a few friends and I devised cosplaying as Pyramid Head and the Bubblehead Nurses from Silent Hill together in a group. Needless to say, this was a much better experience! We worked together making and modifying oversized shirts for our nurse dresses, devised ways that we could see out of the bubbleheads, and on the morning of the convention, sprayed and painted each other with fake blood. Of course, none of us had our drivers’ license, so we took the train to the convention and made a few kids cry. D:

What is your most recent cosplay? My most recent is of the female trainer from the new Pokemon Sword/Shield game! I made her really last minute for Melbourne SupaNova this year, but had such really lovely and heartwarming reactions from other fans! Still waiting on more news regarding the game though. 🙁 #teamscorbunny

What cosplays are you currently working on? I’m currently having a bit of a ‘health break’ to look after my body. But I’ve got a few Pokemon and Sakizo designs on the horizon, as well as a bit of MCU!

Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? I really have a lot of admiration for my friends who just make cosplay ‘work’, despite having busy social and work lives – Kibbleking, The Witch Cosplay, LunarVex, K Cosplay, Blackcrane, Kaori , Kirie Cosplay and TJ Cosplay. As well as a whole host of international cosplayers who I just adore seeing updates from! Bird King Cosplay, Helen Alice Sews, Kamui Cosplay, and of course the amazing Yaya Han who has done so much for cosplay.

Who else do you want to cosplay? After having recently seen Endgame, I’m very keen to put a Captain Marvel together!

Tell us an odd fact about yourself! After a major medical episode about 7 years back, I was diagnosed as being coeliac (gluten intolerant), but I got really bored of it and then just ate a croissant a few months later and was fine??
