Yippee Ki Yay Movie Lovers! McClane-fest in Sydney, new Mystery Science Theatre 3000, Doctor Who turns 55 (though we don’t think the Doctor looks a day over 12 regenerations), Club Cosplay, the Perth Games Festival and oh yes, Eric Idle is in the Country. Here is everything happening across Australia for This Week in Geek.

Thursday until Saturday is the Switch, part escape room, part cross city scavenger hunt across Toowoomba. Wrapped in mystery you use your GPS enabled phone the game is spread across 10kms as you interact with the moderator acting as the Oracle to your Batman (or team of Batman). Friday

Friday is the 55th Anniversary of Doctor Who, the perfect excuse for a Friday night marathon with friends. So pick your favourite Doctor (or Doctors) and go on an adventure in Space and Time.

Remember to always look on the bright side of life this Friday with Monty Python icon Eric Idle coming to the Powerhouse in Brisbane. Performing for one night only, you can expect tickets to go EXTREMELY fast so do not hesitate to pick up tickets straight away. UPDATE: It sold out, but you can join the waitlist

Are you in Rockhampton and need a way to celebrate Doctor Who’s Anniversary? Check out Doctor Who Trivia at Headricks Lane. Join other Whovians or bring your own companions for everything Wibbly Wobbly Timey Whimey.

Saturday

Catch them all for Saturday morning cartoons in Brisbane this weekend. Watch episodes of Pokemon & Digimon while enjoying some beer + cereal in your PJs in the arcade room of Netherworld. It’s how every weekend should start.

Have you checked out the new Loot Room in Brisbane‘s south yet? This Saturday is the perfect excuse with Fantastic Beasts trivia. Open to all with just a small cover charge bring your fellow tabletop gaming and Pottermore friends to check out this new gaming venue.

And finally for Saturday in Brisbane enjoy the music from Final Fantasy with A New World returns to showcases a concert full of FINAL FANTASY music from throughout the 30+ years of games. Playing this Saturday only tickets are limited with only one performance as it tours Australia.

Before we go too far, don’t forget the new Star Wars Identities Exhibition is on at the Sydney Powerhouse right now and running through to June. We will be doing a walkthrough of the exhibition soon but don’t let that stop you from getting there yourself.

The American Express Open Air Cinema comes to Sydney for a limited time starting this Wednesday with a preview screening of the new Robin Hood film. This preview session of the new film at the outdoor cinema will go fast so make sure you pick up tickets if you want to see it.

Thursday at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Just for Laughs festival on all this week in Sydney see the gold standard of comedy improv. From Whose Line is it Anyway watch Colin Mochrie, Brad Sherwood & Greg Proops on stage together in the largest room the Opera House has. Expect tickets for this to go fast as it is a single performance only.

Tabletop gamers in Canberra can have a full weekend ahead of them at LFG Canberra’s Essen Unplugged event kicking off this Friday. Running through to Sunday this is a 3 day long letting you play the latest EssenSpiel releases direct from Europe without the airfare.

Friday is another chance to get to the American Express Open Air Cinema for the Neil Armstrong biopic – First Man. Playing this Friday in Sydney for one screening only watch Ryan Gosling walk on the moon under the stars.

Yippee Ki Yay Movie Lovers! Continue your introduction to Xmas this week with the greatest Christmas Movie ever made, Die Hard at the Ritz Cinema in Sydney playing as a marathon with Die Hard 2 and Die Hard with a Vengeance. Rewatch John McClane save a building of people, then an airport, then a city and get yourself in a Ho Ho Ho mood this Friday.

Palace Cinemas 666 Friday festival continues this week with the Reanimator. Based on the H.P. Lovecraft story “Herbert West, Re-Animator” mixes horror and humour and is the perfect inclusion to this festival. Playing only at the Palace Central Cinema in Sydney, pick up your tickets now.

And finally for Friday in Sydney enjoy the music from Final Fantasy with A New World returns to showcases a concert full of FINAL FANTASY music from throughout the 30+ years of games. Playing this Friday only tickets are limited with only one performance as it tours Australia.

Saturday

Looking for some retro gaming hardware to fill the holes in your collection or looking to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping? Head to the 1989 Arcade this weekend for their 3rd Annual Retro Video Game Markets. Happening both Saturday and Sunday this weekend in Sydney this all-ages event will have a huge selection of games and consoles for you to pick up.

Anime fans in Dubbo have a full day this Saturday with the travelling Japanese Film Festival coming to Reading Cinemas Dubbo. This is a completely free event with films including In this Corner of the World, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, and Bakuman playing back to back. Make sure you get there early to guarantee your tickets only available to pick up on the day.

With the Just For Laughs festival at the Opera House this week we have to give a shout out for the All-Star Gala this Saturday night in Sydney. A combination of headline international acts and local comedians make this the biggest event for the festival so tickets will go fast.

Saturday night is a massive night of Star Wars for the Galatic Bash at the Ritz Cinema. Join the 501st legion, Sons of Obi-Wan Lightsaber academy, R2 Builders club and more for a night of Star Wars fun before a screening of the Star Wars fan documentary My Saga. It’s all happening this Saturday in Sydney.

Sunday

Sunday at the Ritz Cinema in Sydney see the Sydney screening of My Saga which follows Star Wars fan with a Brain Tumour and on a Star Wars journey with his son. This locally made documentary is only screening for a limited number of sessions so if you missed it on Saturday as part of the Galactic Bash make sure you see it this Sunday.

Club Cosplay is on again this Saturday for Club Cosplay: The Paparazzi Edition. Happening in Melbourne and including live performances by the League of Nerdlesque, live DJs and multiple Cosplay photographers/videographer, pick up your tickets and pick out your best Cosplay for this Saturday night.

Sunday

Sunday is the monthly All Star Women’s Comic Book Club meet up in Melbourne. Happening each month this month the book is Trade Paperback, Four Points Volumen 1: Compass South. If you have never been before don’t let that stop you from joining with a raffle and swap meet in addition to finding out what next month’s book will be.

The original 1990 release of the film with Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson of the tale of a boy who stumbles into a witches convention is based on one of our favourite Roald Dahl books and might inspire you to work your way through Roald Dahl’s back catalogue again after seeing.

Saturday in Perth is the Perth Games Festival 2018! This one-day event celebrates and puts a spotlight on all the awesome happening in gaming in Perth with video, tabletop and more in gaming being put on display at the Perth Town Hall. And the best part? It’s completely free so come and check out the awesome that is being made right here.
