Skyward is a great card game from Rule & Make, who have previously brought us Burger Up and Rise to Power among others. Today we’re taking 5 with Allen Chang from the Rule & Make team.
What are you playing right now? I’m currently playing a lot of Dead Cells, more than I care to admit and it’s definitely not impacting on the productivity at work…
Who or what is Skyward? Why is it important? Skyward is a unique and clever strategy card drafting game where players are competing to launch buildings into the sky to create the world’s first airborne city. The game is designed around a new “I split, you choose” card drafting system. Each round, the player who divide the cards into piles is the last person to take from the pile.
The game has garnered several accolades:
Dice Tower Seal of Excellence,
Shortlist in Best Australian Game by Board Game Australia, Finalist in Best Gameplay and Best Visuals for the Australian Tabletop Awards by Kanga and Finalist in Excellence in Design by Freeplay
Apart from your game what should everyone be looking out for in local Australian Pop Culture? People should check out Guild Master which is designed by Chris Antony, a good friend of ours and published by the awesome Good Games Publishing. The game is currently on Kickstarter right now.
Major prediction for Pop Culture 12 months from now? We’re currently seeing a lot of video game designers branching out into doing tabletop game designs. Video games like Darkest Dungeon and Hand of Fate (disclosure: they are a partner of ours) draws inspirations from board games. We’re also seeing many tabletop game designers moving into video game space. Valve’s upcoming digital card game Artifact, is designed by Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering.
For the next 12 months, I foresee this trend to further continue to> interweave. We’re also seeing many video game and board game colleagues venturing into games that feature both digital and tabletop roots in the VR space. We know of several projects> happening in this space.
Best last thing you ate? I ate a Pulled Pork Burrito with copious amounts of Jalapeño and Habanero sauce 30 minutes before I wrote this answer.
And that’s 5! Skyward is available on Rule & Make’s store, you can also check it out on Tabletopia. Follow Rule & Make on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date on everything. With PAX coming up, there’s sure to a few somethings going on!
