OzComicCon returns to Brisbane, The Bendigo Record Record, Comic and Toy Fair gets a new name and… Time Travel with a Timelord? All this and a lot more is happening across Australia for your weekend in this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

Running through to October 14 is the Brickman Experience at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast. Book your tickets to enjoy these huge LEGO displays by Australia’s only LEGO certified master builder and maybe stop by the official LEGO store (also at Dreamworld) on your way home.

Thursday

In cinemas this Thursday ahead of the School Holidays in 3 states is the animated Yeti movie – Smallfoot, Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English Strikes Again and finally Jack Black/Cate Blanchett The House with a Clock in its Walls. Check back later this week for our spoiler-free reviews.

On Friday, for the start of the Queensland School Holidays the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is playing its new Tales of a Time Traveler. From the birth of the universe travel to the edge of a black hole to learn more about time distortions narrated by your personal timelord guide – David Tennant.

For your binging pleasure, this Friday Netflix is dropping the new Emma Stone/Jonah Hill mind trip – Maniac. We don’t know too much about this one yet but the trailers give us a half Suckerpunch/half Legion vibe with its reality-bending series out this week.

New Doctor Who is only a few weeks away but this Friday you can show off your Timelord like knowledge of everything Gallifreyan with Man vs Bear Trivia at Fritzenberger in Brisbane. Gather your companions and register your team to ensure your spot.

Saturday

OzComicCon returns to Brisbane this Saturday! One of the largest touring cons in Australia this event always promises a big list of guests from film, tv and comics as well as supporting and local featured cosplayers. For the best ticket prices, pick up your tickets online before the event.

Need some practice preparing for the Apocalypse? Brisbane‘s VR Free Space Arcade is going all end of the world with their Doomsday Zombie Survivalist Tournament this Saturday. Show off your skills in Arizona Sunshine and put up the high score to be the Ultimate Zombie Survivalist.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

Do you have razor sharp puzzle solving skills when it comes to escape rooms? Want to see what it takes to be World Championship material? This Wednesday at University of Technology Sydney you can see teams of 4 as they compete in the Australian qualifiers for the World Escape Room Championship. It’s open for all 18+ teams of 4 so if you missed out the last qualifier this is your last chance in Sydney.

Return to your Master Chief roots with HALO: Combat Evolved tournament at the Barracks in Canberra this Thursday. The top 16 players on this original XBOX launch title will go on to play the finals for a nice big tab at the Reload Bar.

Also in gaming on Thursday night at the 1989 Arcade in Sydney you can show your high score skills on the original Wonder Boy. Limited to 30 players only each player gets one credit (3 lives) and 10 minutes to set their best to win the coveted 1989 trophy.

Can’t wait for the next AICon? Good news! MAICon (miniature AICon) is on this Friday and Saturday in Launceston. Starting with the After Dark event on Friday night before the main mini-con on Saturday which is everything you can expect from AICon, just in a condensed format.

Saturday

At the Melbourne IMAX you can also see a special screening of the digitally remastered 2001: A Space Odyssy. The Kubrick classic, a big screen adaption of The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke, it’s playing as part of SPACETEMBER at the IMAX on Saturday.

Sunday

The Bendigo Record, Comic and Toy Fair is back this Sunday but with a new name, Bendi-Con! Attracting even more exhibitors than before if you have ever been you definitely will want to check it out again this weekend.

Starting Sunday and running all next week is Swordcraft Quest. This week-long LARP event happening annually in Lardner outside of Melbourne with Quests, Epic Battles and Tales around the campfire is Australia’s largest LARPing event.

4. South Australia & Northern Territory

Wednesday

It starts on Saturday for 24 Hour Comics Day 2018, a marathon comic creating event challenging attendees to put together a 24-page comic book in 24 hours. Starting on Saturday and running through the night to Sunday in Perth, this 8-year-old event welcomes all levels of skill. Register now to secure your spot.

Head to Mandurah south of Perth for RahCon 2018. This one day only con is our favourite type of con with vendors, cosplay and panels on top of special screenings, workshops and more! This is a jam-packed event with a theme of Magic this year so if you are a druid, warlock or just have your letter from Hogwarts pick up some tickets for Saturday.
