Start your week gazing into the stars before going to a galaxy far far away and then hitchhike your way back plus a whole lot more. Here is everything for you to plan out your weekend with everything happening across Australia this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

Happy World Turtle Day! Whether you prefer them finding Nemo on the EAC or Teenage Ninjas today is the day for everything great about Turtles!

Also continuing on Wednesday until Thursday, Stargazing Live is on the ABC each night this week. The last one of these set a record and discovered a new star in the night sky so what will be found on this one.

Thursday

Get to the Cinema in less than 12 Parsecs this Thursday for the second ‘Star Wars Story’ with the Han Solo movie. If you haven’t already been to a 12:01 AM session then check back later this week for our full no spoiler review.

As part of the MELT Festival of Queer Arts and Culture this Thursday you can meet like minded gamers as part of the Gaymer Night at the Brisbane Powerhouse. This a mix of tabletop gaming and digital platforms will also include some playtest of in-progress games.

Also on Thursday in Ipswich its a little different with the stage production of Doctor Who meets Dorothy. This sketch performance will have the audience decide which doors Dorothy will take and could end up meeting anyone from Shrek to Pikachu.

Friday

Don’t forget your Towel on Friday for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Day to celebrate all things Douglas Adams (except for Vogon poetry).

Friday is also Geek Pride Day, sharing it’s date with Towel Day, this annual day is for celebrating all things geek in case you needed a special day to coop your friends into a Firefly Marathon or an inpromptu game of Munchkin.

If need a Harrison Ford fix after Han Solo and you are heading out on Friday in Brisbane you can get to GOMA for a screening of the original 1982 Blade Runner. Playing the Ridley Scott Final Cut you can pick up tickets online or at the door.

Friday is also the kick off for MonsterFest 2018 at Brisbane‘s Myer Centre Cinemas. This weekend long horror and monster movie fest has a huge line up of movies you may not see on the big screen any other way and it starts with a screening of Occupation. Check the Event Cinemas event site for the full line up of movies running through to Sunday.

And if you just want to stay in then Part 3 of Del Toro’s Dreamworks animated Trollhunters hits Netflix on Friday. This season also adds Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany to the already impressive voice cast if you were looking for yet another reason to binge the series this weekend.

Saturday

Still at Brisbane‘s GOMA on Saturday you can get some tickets to watch the Wachowski’s Sci-Fi epic Cloud Atlas. Fair warning for anyone who hasn’t seen this time spanning sci-fi film, it’s nearly 3 hours long so maybe skip the extra large drink to take in with you.

Sunday

And if you missed the Blade Runner screening at Brisbane‘s GOMA on Friday you can always catch a double feature of the original 1982 Blade Runner Final Cut and then Blade Runner 2049. Get a ticket for one or both via the online box office or at the door.

NARF is the Nerf Australia Rival Fan group and this Sunday in Brisbane they are having another one of their meets. Nerf Rival is the newest line of the awesome Hasbro Nerf line, just think Paintball but instead of paint, tiny squishy Nerf ammo balls. If you want to learn more about this scene, try before your buy or even have some of your own you were itching to use hit up the event listing.

And don’t forget that MonsterFest is running until this Sunday in Brisbane. There are tons of great films for you to discover including a special 31st anniversary screening of the classic Monster Squad.

And lastly for Sunday in Brisbane it’s time you can sell your soul again at Netherworld. Yes, your slightly used soul can be traded for something worthwhile finally, TOKENS! Everything comes with tokens this Sunday no matter what you buy so you can hit the arcade room until close (or you have to give up your soul, whatever comes first).

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

If you are in Canberra you can even try for a World Record attempt for Stargazing at the ANU campus on Wednesday. Tickets for the event include telescopes for you to participate (at cost) so bring a group of 4-20 of your friends for a night out under the stars.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are 34 this year and the 1989 Arcade Bar in Sydney is celebrating with an all Ninja Turtles night. Play Ninja Turtles on the NES, SNES and Megadrive on top of their Konami Ninja Turtles arcade and Turtles Trivia (and of course there will be Pizza specials).

Saturday

Looking for that hard to find collectable and already tried every store you can find and the internet has let you down? If you are in Canberra you can try the APCS Toy & Hobby Fair this Saturday. This touring fair has a ton of classic collectables so if you are looking for something more vintage this might be the thing.

Sydney‘s Spawn Point Bar is all about Speedruns this Saturday with their fourth Speedrun Marathon with some of Australia’s top speedrunners. There will be 2 stations setup for runs non-stop all night but if you are a speedrunner make sure you contact Spawn Point through the event listing.

Sunday

Sunday as part of the VIVID Festival in Sydney Terminator, Aliens and Avatar director James Cameron will be giving a once off talk. This will no doubt be sold out quick so don’t hesitate in getting your ticket. UPDATE: It sold out.

If you like a good Zine then Other Worlds Zine Fair is back for 2018 at the Marrickville Town Hall this Sunday. This event is hitting it’s 5th year in a row and will have some great local self published books and comics for you to come and find your new favourite in Sydney.

3. Victoria & Tasmania

Starting actually on Tuesday but still running on Wednesday and all the way til Sunday is Freeplay 2018 which is Australia’s longest running and largest independent (mostly video) games festival in Melbourne! This is a huge event with lots for creators and makers of all sorts of games with just a few things that would be interesting for non-gamers too. Deza Con V returns to Narre Warren in Melbourne this weekend. This one day event has everything you want from a major con with Cosplay, Video Game Traders, Toys, Comics and local Artist Alley and it is on this Saturday.

Fancy yourself a national champion of Settles of Catan? The Australian Boardgame family Tournament is having rounds for Melbourne for Settlers this Saturday and you can register for your seat. You definitely need to book ahead and Settles of Catan is only on Saturday with this event continuing on Sunday with Ticket to Ride and Rummikub.

Sunday

Do you want to race across Melbourne like you were solving magic riddles across Hogwarts? The Great Wizard Post Quest is afoot this Sunday in Melbourne for you and your team to hunt down the letters to solve puzzles and follow the magical mail. This event is open for booking so figure out who you would want on your team to win.

Also this Sunday is the Box Hill Record and Comic Fair. This Melbourne event is pretty big, so big they have changed locations for this weekend but is always great for comic book collectors with holes in their collection. Held only 4 times a year, best make your need list for this weekend.

4. South Australia & Northern Territory

Looking for that rare collectable? The Hordak figure to finish off your Princess of Power collection before the Netflix reboot? Then lucky the Collector Zone Toy & Hobby Fair is on again this Sunday in Perth. This event is only on every 3 months with tons of hard to find things so if you have a hole in your heart from that hole in your collection make sure you get along.
