Deadpool does a number two in cinemas nationwide, Robot fight club in Brisbane, Comic-Gong in Wollongong for 2018 and BAM10 all weekend long in Melbourne. This is just a few of the things you have to look forward to this Week in Geek across Australia.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

Get a double feature of Hayao Miyazaki at Brisbane‘s GOMA on Wednesday with My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. See one or both by picking up tickets online or at the box office.

Thursday

The S#%tbox Rally is a drive event with cars travelling from Brisbane to Darwin over 7 days to raise money for the Cancer Council. Starting off this Friday means this Thursday you can head to the pre-fundraising event at Brisbane‘s Yatala Drive In Cinema for a double feature of Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2! Let’s be honest the fundraising thing is just a bonus here.

Friday

In The House continues it’s current season with the 1997 classic, Starship Troopers. Do you want to know more? It’s from the same director as Robocop and Total Recall and has a post Doogie Howser and pre-HIMYM Neil Patrick Harris. Do you want to know more? Get your tickets via the Event Cinema site for this Friday night at Brisbane‘s Myer Centre Cinemas plus Event Cinemas Cairns, Townsville, Noosa and Toowoomba.

Starting Friday in Brisbane LARP’ers can enjoy the full weekend event from Heroes Odyssey. Running Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can go for the day or camp all weekend in Brisbane’s Mt Cotton.

Continuing from the World Science Festival the Brisbane Astronomical Society are hosting a free Star Gazing event in Ipswich for you to see the night sky. They will also be bringing their own telescopes so you only need to bring yourself and your burning desire to explore the stars.

Saturday

Are you short a few bricks in building your 1:1 LEGO Death Star Replica? Do you live on the Sunshine Coast? Brick Resales is heading to the Sunshine Coast this Saturday with local LEGO retailers to help you round out your collection. They will also be taking a gold coin donation for RizeUp supporting families affected by domestic violence.

Netherworld’s Arcade Club will be focusing on the 1982 Nibbler this Saturday in Brisbane. Also joining will be Michael Kibbey who broke the MAME World Record for Nibbler earlier this year at Netherworld to give you tips and tricks as part of the masterclass to up your game. As with all classes it is completely free and followed by a small tournament to win a limited edition pin.

Also this Saturday the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be presenting another in their film concert series when they support Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Brisbane. Watch the full film with a live orchestra playing the supporting score. There are only 2 sessions so get your tickets for Saturday.

Sunday

Sunday is the day for the RSPCA’s annual Million Paws Walk raising money to fight Animal Cruelty. From Ace the Bathound and Krpto the Superdog to even Scratchy the Supercat all are welcome to register and raise money for our furry (and some not) friends at events in every state across Australia this weekend.

This Sunday it’s Robot Fight Night in Brisbane, well during the day it is as Robowars Brisbane takes over the Southbank Piazza for 4 epic sessions of Robot on Robot battle. Starting at 10am and running into the afternoon you can get tickets for one or ALL events to watch all the action.

And lastly, also at Brisbane‘s Netherworld this Sunday Two Bit Movie Club brings you a duo of trashy 50’s/60’s sci-fi with The Brain That Wouldn’t Die’ and ‘It! The Terror From Beyond Space’. Both are playing back to back and both are entirely free.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Thursday

Love a good Zine or self published comic? This Thursday in Sydney you can checkout the Offset Zine Festival hosted by SAE Creative Media Institute. This free event will have plenty of local independent creatives including art for you to discover.

Also on Thursday at the 1989 Arcade Bar you can show off your Super Nintendo skills with their Super Bomberman Tournament. This 4 player SNES Tournament is free for all comers who sign up at the Bar before it kicks off at 8 PM sharp in Sydney.

Friday

It’s just a jump to the right in Canberra for the Interactive screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show this Friday night. If you are the type that likes to silently sit and watch a movie this is not the event for you. BUT if you love to put your hands in the air and wave them like you just don’t care then you are going to want to pickup some tickets for this charity session supporting Diversity Act.

Saturday

This Saturday in Wollongong Comic Gong returns for 2018! One of the longest running Pop Culture festivals in the area, this one day event attracts tons of exhibitors and cosplayers as also one of the biggest events in the area.

Also on Saturday in Sydney‘s Castle Hill you can support the local 501st Legion as they participate in the Relay for Life. The Relay aims to raise money for the Cancel Council and Cosplayers are also welcomed and encouraged to attend. For more details check out the official site.

If you fancy more medieval fare for your weekend the Blacktown City Medieval Fayre is happening this Saturday and Sunday in Sydney. This year they are also including a Medieval Banquet on Saturday night. The Fayre is free but booking is essential for the banquet.

Sunday

Are you an up and coming streamer or eSports fanatic? You might be interested in the Rise of eSports panel happening this Wednesday night in Melbourne. Bringing together industry, gaming and eSports entertainment representatives they will be talking all about eSports as it is and where it might be going.

Thursday

Are you a sci-fi writer in Melbourne? Want to meet other sci-fi writers? The Loop Bar is playing host for you to lonely sci-fi writers to meet and exchange ideas and talk challenges to get you through that writers block. This creators only event is on Thursday.

Friday

Battle Arena Melbourne is Australia’s largest fighting game only eSports tournament and it is happening for the 10th time in Melbourne this weekend thanks to CouchWarriors. Starting on Friday night and running all weekend BAM10 brings both casual and pros together for TONS of gaming tournaments under the one roof and even if you don’t want to register play you can still get tickets to watch all on the official site.

And just one more thing for Friday in Melbourne.. Every Friday Night until June is an after hours night for the Melbourne Planetarium. This 18+ event will let you pickup a drink from the Planetarium bar and then take you through the night sky. Booking is essential.

Saturday

Get your Mini-Comic Con fix on Saturday with the Mill Park Library in Melbourne holding their own Comic Con. This one day only event promises food trucks, gaming, comics and exhibitors so put on your best Cosplay and check it out on Saturday.

Also in Adelaide “Quest Time!” Is where Improv meets the D20 tabletop campaign rules for this Fantasy/Improv comedy show. Playing for only a single show each week until the end of June you can see it first on Thursday.

Friday

Want a relaxing start to the weekend playing hundreds of new board games? The Big Game Theory’s May event at the Whitehorse Inn might be for you this Friday night. Only $5 entry will get you 6 hours of gaming bliss in Adelaide.

Saturday

Ninja is a playground game involving the slapping of your opponents hands which has a world record for the largest game ever played in the US with 554 players. Also on Saturday the Palace Nova cinema in Adelaide have a special family friendly screening of the Robin Williams animated Aladdin. Playing for limited sessions on Saturday and Sunday make sure you get your tickets early you don’t even need to be a diamond in the rough to get some.

Wrapping up the Spanish Film Festival on Wednesday catch Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth at the Cinema Paradiso. Shown in the original spanish with subtitles if you are a fan of Del Toro’s Hellboy then this is a must see in Perth.

Thursday

Need some Star Wars leading up to Solo? If you are one with the Force and the Force is one with you then Star Wars Trivia at the Left Bank in Perth is where you want to be. This free trivia night only has limited spots so booking is absolutely essential.

Friday

Yes this Sunday the Backlot session of Ready Player One is Perth Homeless Support Group with all proceeds go to buy Care Pack items to feed the Homeless. There is no limit to how much good you can do this Sunday.
