While most of the internet was obsessing over a blurry image was Spectrum, Superior Iron Man or Iron Lad in the Superbowl trailer for Doctor Strange Disney+ dropped another trailer for an upcoming Disney+ exclusive movie. Thinking our Saturday morning cartoon sense wouldnt notice with the return of Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
For anyone who was alive in the 90s Chip ‘n Dale was an essential part of the Saturday Morning Disney experience which included shows like Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Tailspin and more. Most of these shows took Disney characters from short features and gave them a full action and adventure series. This saw characters like Baloo from the Jungle Book be reimagined as a cargo plane pilot or 2 chipmunks (Chip ‘n Dale) into Private Detectives.
The upcoming Chip ‘n Dale was did not come out of nowhere with it being announced alongside other upcoming projects (at the time) such as Lightyear from Pixar. However, Rescue Rangers had a lot less detail with it not being entirely clear if it would be a new series or a once off mini or a feature film, but with the new trailer the answer has been made clear with it coming to Disney+ as a exclusive streaming film on May 20th this year.
The film looks to be taking a cue from Roger Rabbit (who is even in the trailer) with the original show being considered a show and Chip ‘n Dale being actors who were on it that we are revisiting 30 years later. The new series will see John Mulaney and Andy Samberg voicing the title roles.
Starting off as a Behind the Music style documentary we start seeing some very Roger Rabbit’esque with both Chip and Dale set in the ‘real world’ much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit except with no Eddie Valance main character. Clearly aimed for a younger audience (who were not alive when Rescue Rangers aired) we are still kinda hyped for this one and will be watching it with a bowl of cereal in hand.
