Epic Harry Potter Marathons, Go Game Market in Melbourne, CozCon returns to the Gold Coast, new Daredevil on Netflix and a whole lot of Time Travel plus a lot more. Here is everything you have to look forward to across Australia to add to your weekend for this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

The In the House film festival continues on Wednesday at Event Cinemas with a double feature of John Carpenter’s body-snatching, The Thing. It’s playing across Queensland in Event Cinemas on the Gold Coast at Pacific Fair & Southport, Cairns, Ipswich, Townsville, Sunshine Coast Maroochydore cinemas, Toowoomba, Mackay and Brisbane‘s Loganholme, Myer Centre, Chermside and Garden City Event Cinemas. And just a reminder every In The House this season is playing on Wednesday and Monday nights in case you want to start your weekend even earlier.

Also on Wednesday night, the American Express outdoor cinema continues it’s Brisbane run with the people’s choice film selection – The Breakfast Club. One of the all-time great John Hughes movies and the basis for tons of Pop Culture today if you have never seen it you can pick up your tickets right now to watch it at Southbank.

If you have binged watched Black Books more than once (it’s currently on Netflix too FYI) then you probably already know Bill Bailey starts his Australia Tour in Brisbane this week. Wednesday and Thursday are the last dates to pick up tickets for QPAC in Brisbane. Limited tickets are available now with some shows already selling out.

Thursday

A light week in movies this week to help you catch up with so many great films still in cinemas. But if you are an anime fan then you can see the Japanese ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’ playing in the original Japanese with English subs. It’s playing at a limited amount of cinemas and for a limited number of screenings at Event Cinemas so check your local for details.

Also on Thursday in BrisbaneB-Movies Live continues with it’s the second night. Happening for four nights only across October watch live stage re-enactments of classic B-movies like Death Race or this week’s titles – Alley of the Gwangi and The Lost World

Friday

On Friday Iron Fist might be no more on Netflix but Daredevil Season 3 brings the DD villain we are most excited about – Bullseye! The entire season is up Friday night because justice never sleeps.

PaizoCon is the 3-day tabletop gaming convention dedicated to celebrating and enjoying the tabletop RPG’s created by Paizo Inc. Starting Friday on the Gold Coast this event has grown and expanded over the last 10 years within an active community. If you are an avid Starfinder or Pathfinder player this is definitely the event for you.

Saturday

The Second Oz Kong Off is rapidly approaching so up your DK game at Brisbane‘s Netherworld for a Donkey Kong Arcade Club. This free event will have you learning at the hands of the Ultimate Denzien winner before a small tournament to win some of those sweet limited edition Netherworld pins. It’s on this Saturday.

In Event Cinemas every Saturday until November 10th they are replaying the countdown to Infinity War with a different MCU film every week. This Saturday its Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 playing at Event Cinemas Chermside, Indooroopilly and Loganholme in Brisbane. Hopefully, this can get you through until Captain Marvel next year.

Enough of the heroes as it’s the villains turn for a film festival with every Saturday until November 10th Even Cinemas is playing some of the Disney films with the best villains starting with The Little Mermaid. It’s playing at almost every Event Cinema across the state so check the Event Cinema site for your local screening details.

Supanova Brisbane is rapidly approaching and you only have a few weeks left to get your Cosplay complete but if you need a little help then CozCon is happening this Saturday on the Gold Coast. The second CozCon, this event is all about Cosplay and run by Cosplayers for Cosplayers. Expect vendors, photographers, panels and of course, Cosplay.

Not getting enough Doctor Who in your week? On Saturday the Judoon have locked down the Fox and Hounds at Mt Tambourine south of Brisbane to investigate a murder, things get complicated when not only the Doctor arrives… but which Doctor? And how many? The second Doctor Who Murder Mystery at the Fox and Hounds, there are only limited tickets available so don’t delay.

Hobbits, Elves and Middle-Earthers can enjoy a night of Toiken’esque feasting, fun, entertainment and dancing with An Evening in Middle-earth this Saturday. It’s all happening for a good cause with all proceeds from the night going towards supporting the Pyjama Foundation and it’s work in literacy programmes for underprivileged kids.

Sunday

Great Scott! Sunday is the anniversary of the date that Marty McFly travelled back from 1985 to 1955 before travelling back to 1985 to get to 2015 before accidentally travelling to the alternate timeline of 1985 forcing him to go to 1955 THEN having to travel to 1885 before returning to 1985! We know… this is heavy.

And on Sunday if your home TV isn’t big enough for the Force Awakens drop into the Event Cinema at Chermside or Indooroopilly in Brisbane again for Episode VII playing on the big screen. It’s playing for one day only with the next film in the new Disney Star Wars playing every Sunday until November 11.

And wrapping up your Sunday at the American Express Open Air Cinema again you can catch a case of the feels with the recently released Christopher Robin film. Playing again at Southbank in Brisbane the open air cinema is only running until early November so make sure you get in as many films as you can.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

Starting Thursday and running through the weekend the 2018 SciFi Film Festival begins in Sydney. With films from science fiction, fantasy and horror the festival includes a number of exclusive films (like ‘UFO’ staring X-Files Gillian Anderson) and often Q&As with the filmmakers themselves. GET OVER HERE to the 1989 Arcade for Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade Tournament this Thursday in Sydney. The Tournament is limited to 32 players and starting off at 7:30 PM Sharp so make sure you book your place to win that sweet bar tab and the coveted 1989 Trophy.

Friday Night at the Ritz Cinema in Sydney the definitive Fantasy film of the 80’s is playing as part of Shocktober – The Neverending Story. Call your Luck Dragon as there is only 2 sessions playing with the first on Friday night and the last on Sunday afternoon, which of course means you need to go see it both times.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is less than a month away so this Saturday is the perfect time for a crash course in all things Pottermore with the Palace Cinemas in Canberra playing all 8 Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts films back to back. There will be giveaways and cosplay is encouraged for this 23 Hour long marathon that will test even the most dedicated wizards and witches as it starts at 11 AM Saturday and runs through the night.

If the future is Steam then shine up your best goggles for the Steampunk Victoriana Fair at the Goulburn Waterworks this Saturday and Sunday. A mixture of original Victorian and cosplay will be on hand adding some retro-futurism to the event but we are looking forward to the Invention competition on Saturday most of all. With Melbourne Games Week starting Saturday it might be the calm before the storm and the perfect night for Trivia Night at Bartronica this Wednesday. You don’t need a TARDIS or Delorean to time travel this weekend as the 2018 Timeline Festival kicks off at Kryal Castle in Ballarat. With over 300 historical reenactors will be descending on the Castle this Saturday and Sunday with everything Medieval and more, pick up tickets for one or both days now.

The GO Game Market returns on Sunday in Melbourne and it’s bigger than ever before! On top of being able to buy/sell, talk and play about some of your favourite games from every gaming generation this time around there are several new additions to the Game Market including Tabletop Gaming, Podcasters, Reviewers, Streamers and a whole section dedicated to Indie games in the free play area. It’s on this Sunday.

Got some back issues you need to track down but you have already tried your local and going on the internet feels like cheating? Wrap up your Sunday in Melbourne at the Box Hill Record & Comic Fair is your best bet. These are super popular with tons of vendors and some hidden gems out of personal collections so whether you have a particular issue or just having a browse this is worth a look.
