Happy CosFriday Everybody! PAX is approaching faster than a speeding bullet so as we count down we say hello to a strange cosplayer from another planet, one of our favourite Victorian Cosplayers – Super Sam Cosplay.

What’s your name & how old are you? My name is Sam and I am 32 years old

How long have you been cosplaying? I started cosplaying in 2012 at Melbourne’s first Comic Con. I went along with a group of about 6 friends as an X-men team.

What inspired you to start cosplaying? In 2011 a friend of mine had a themed Bday party. the theme: Heroes and Villains. At the time I was really into Wolverine, so I made some crazy big claws out of some stuff I found in the art room at work (I’m a school teacher), stuck them through some old paintball gloves, grew out my facial hair, and grabbed a leather jacket from an op-shop. It was a great night…and soon after that was Melbourne’s first Comic Con. I made some upgrades 😉

What was your First Cosplay? Wolverine was my first and I cosplayed him for about 4years. I only really did the version from the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film.

What is your most recent cosplay? My most recent cosplay is Captain America – the classic style from the film Captain America: The First Avenger. I think I like the classics. I have a Reeve Superman that I love, and I’ve done a comic style Ra’s al Ghul and comic Bane as well.

What cosplays are you currently working on? I have a Mr Incredible in the works at the moment. I just need to get the logo, boots and gloves done (then colour my hair which will be interesting).

I also really want to do Metroman from the Megamind movie! I had someone have a go at putting it together, but the colours were a bit off so I need a do-over…but we’ll get there.

Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? Ooooh that’s hard. I follow a few cosplayers on Instagram.

I think Dynamite Webber is awesome; he has some really good costumes and a good variety of cosplays. Big fan of DJP Costuming too. Both really cool guys who make some really good stuff, and make it look good too! Both from the states. I’ve also been very lucky to know HEAPS of amazing people more locally.

There are so many people, in Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney who do fantastic work and who have made cosplaying extremely enjoyable for me. And I’m very lucky to call them all friends.

Who else do you want to cosplay? Growing up, my dad used to read the Phantom comics. A man with the strength of 10 tigers wearing purple spandex. You can’t go wrong! I’d love to do that someday. I’d also love to get my dad in a classic, white Jor-El suit (Marlon Brando) so that we could do Kal-El and Jor-El together. That would be really nice.

Tell us an odd fact about yourself! Odd fact? Uuuuuuh … well, people seem to think that because I cosplay Superman so much, and Wolverine before that, that I must be a HUGE fan of the characters; read all the comics etc. I like them, yeah, like anyone likes cool characters, but I don’t think I have ever read a comic book in my entire life.
