D23 2024 just finished and you might have only just gotten over your SDCC whiplash with so soooo many announcements only 3 weeks ago (see our Day 0, Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 coverage) but Disney held a lot of stuff back just for D23 this weekend. What is D23? Well it’s like SDCC but all things Disney. D23 is the ultimate Disney fan event for the year outside of going to Disneyland.
The annual event is more than just movies (and now shows) with Disney owning so many properties like Marvel and Star Wars to go with studios like Pixar outside of the Disney name D23 is the event for the Disney fandom covering all the above but also a lot about their parks around the world and cruises (which are big in the US). More than just a presentation with the D23 halls also including merch, displays and more than a few previews of upcoming rides being worked on.
Star Wars @ D23 2024
- Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni shared a first look at the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie which is on schedule for a May 2026 date. It is currently being filmed but a teaser trailer for D23 was cut together
- A new trailer for the Disney+ LEGO Star Wars: Rebuilt the Galaxy was released ahead of the movie release in September (next month!). If you did not know this was coming then some of the LEGO sets may have confused you a little.
- Andor season 2 has been slated for Disney+ in 2025 with K-250 and Krennic to appear
- And we got a proper trailer for Skeleton Crew streaming the first 2 episodes December 3. This has a Space Goonies vibe to it and shows part of the Star Wars galaxy we have never seen before… the suburbs.
Disney @ D23 2024
- More Moana 2 with an official trailer being released to go with the previous teaser
- The Snow White live action that got delayed last year looks like it will be coming in March 2025 wit ha first look teaser trailer
- Freaky Friday 2 is now called ‘Freakier Friday’ with Lindsay Lohan’s character is now a mum
- Frozen 3 is still being worked on with concept art show in the presentation and scheduled for 2026 (and a fourth movie looks possible)
- Disney Animation released another new trailer for the Lion King prequel out later this year – Mufasa
- New footage for Zootopia 2 shown, will introduce reptiles with one specifically voiced by Ke Huy Quan scheduled for 2025
- A first look at the new live action Stitch came from a small Stitch take over of D23 for Lilo and Stitch (he looks considerably less nightmare fuel than say the first Sonic)
- Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is a Disney Channel sequel series as a direct continuation of the original series
Pixar @ D23 2024
- Incredibles 3 is happening and officially announced for Pixar
- The Inside Out Disney+ show that is coming is going to be called ‘Dream Productions’ (it will be set between Inside Out 1 and 2 and based on the movie studio inside of Riley’s head)
- Toy Story 5 is going to have an army of Buzz Lightyear’ and will have a main story hook of the toys come up against an iPad generation coming Jun 2026
- ‘Hoppers’ is a new Pixar film in the works about a girl who can put her consensus inside of a robot beaver
- Pixar’s Elio has had it’s release date pushed again and now is expected June 2025 (in cinemas still)
- The Pixar Disney+ series Win or Lose got a trailer with it coming December 6
Marvel Studios @ D23 2024
- There was a bit of Agatha All Along with the show coming to Disney+ mid-next month as the MCU/D+ Halloween type show. A longer trailer with more story was dropped for people not inside D23
- Daredevil: Born Again officially is getting a season 2 with the first footage of season 1 shown confirming the Punisher will appear (Kamala Khan’s Dad is also going to make an appearance) when it comes to Disney+ in March 2025
- There was also some footage from Iron Heart which will be coming to D+ in 2025
- The cast for the Fantastic Four appeared in a brief message for D23 while filming in London and the score by Michael Giacchino (Up, Ratatoullie, The Incredibles) was played
- The Wakanda spin off is still going ahead as Eyes of Wakanda following the Wakandan spies the War Dogs as an animated Disney+ series with 4 episodes
- More Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World was shown with a much better look at the Harrison Ford CGI looking Red Hulk
- Extensive looks at art for “Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man” animated series which is no longer called “Spider-Man: Freshman Year”. This looks to have a huge cast which may mean it no longer occurs within the 19999 as many voice actors were confirmed including ones for George Stacy and Norman Osborne.
- What If…? season 3 will have an Avengers Team including Moon Knight and Monica Rambeau for the final season
- X-Men 97 Season 2 will borrow from the Grant Morrison era X-Men suits. Polaris, Warlock & Apocalypse will appear
- And Doctor Doom is coming to Fortnite
Everything Else @ D23 2024
- Avatar 3 concept art was shown with the official title reveal of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’
- Tron: Ares is still coming with some footage shown and the Nine Inche Nails composing the score
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is now in production (fun fact the star who played a younger Ryan Reynolds in the Adam Project was going to play Kidpool in Deadpool and Wolverine but hit puberty so wasn’t right for it anymore, instead was played by one of Ryan Reynolds kids)
- Disney are developing a Monster Jam toys (the little Hot Wheels like trucks that are not Hot Wheels) with Dwayne the Rock Johnson attached
- The Simpsons will be making four episodes exclusive for Disney+
- In all musicals news, The Greatest Showman is being adapted for the stage, the Hercules stage show performers appeared at D23 and the stage show Frozen will also come to Disney+ in 2025
- Harrison Ford and Frank Oz (plus 12 others) were inducted into the Disney Hall of Fame aka Disney Legends
- There was MULTIPLE Disneyland and Disneyworld park additions (honestly a lot) with announcements for around the world but no Disneyland Gold Coast yet.
