Announced officially this morning via the BBC press release and then again by the showrunner, Doctor Who has been renewed for another season by the BBC but you might be in for a bit of a wait.
If you have been living under a social media rock for the last few months the latest season with new female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker has been a rating bonanza for the BBC with most episodes scoring as high or higher than the peaks of the previous season of ‘Nu-Who’. So it is no surprise that the BBC has greenlit the next season of Doctor Who under the current/new showrunner Chris Chibnall, unfortunately for Whovians you will have to wait until “early” 2020 to see it.
Announced with the final episode of the current shorter season (10 episodes instead of the normal 12-13 in the Moffat era) we will only have the New Years Day episode, instead of a Christmas episode, before you have a 1-2 year wait on your hands. Season 12 has already announced that all cast members will be returning along with the showrunner.
What does this delay mean? Will there be a reshuffling of production? Did the BCC want to wait until the end of the current season before giving the go-ahead to their new showrunner? There is more than enough time for speculation with the wait ahead but if you can excuse us we might see if we can take a shortcut, Allons y!
The final episode of the current season of Doctor Who airs in its new 5:55 pm AEST Monday timeslot tonight on ABC (it’s already up on iView).
