We are down to one episode of Loki before the long wait for the next bit of Marvel content but the MCU Celestials have seen it fit to let us know what is coming next outside of the big screen by dropping a new trailer and confirmed date for ‘Marvel’s What If…?’
For anyone who isn’t familiar What If is a series of comics with beginnings in 1977. Spanning 13 volumes as either ongoing or limited series What If is like the DC Elseworlds label that allows stories with alternate history of the comic universe it is in. Want to know if Gwen Stacy never existed? Or if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? Or if Spider-Man’s Secret Identity had been made public? (Ok those last 2 have since happened but not in 1977). Basically What if was a comic series to explore what we would call the Multiverse where anything can happen from a simple different decision to Alligator Loki.
The previously announced series will do exactly that in exploring some alternate history of the MCU. Want to see T’Challa be taken by the Ravagers and become Star Lord instead of Peter Quill? Agent Carter be given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers? Maybe even Killmonger being there that day to save Tony Stark from a chest full of shrapnel? This is definitely that series.
Told from the point of view of the Watcher (from a race of beings that exists in each reality that has the sole purpose of recording pivotal events but never interfering whom we saw at in post credits of GoTG2) the anthology series will span 10 episodes to deep dive into the What If of the MCU changing pivotal moments. The series will feature some of the voice talent from the MCU films with Michael B Jordan, Chris Hemsworth, Michael Douglas, Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Hayley Atwell, Karen Gillian and a LOT lot more (sorry no RDJ it seems).
What we are most excited about is unlike the other MCU D+ series which are all being shot as a single one off story across multiple episodes, What If does have a potential to being a format that can be revisited and added making it possibly the only MCU D+ show that could have a Season Two. We might also think that because unlike each of the other shows this is the only one with LEGO tie-in sets.
You can check out the full trailer below in anticipation for the August release but let us know what you think? Are you excited for What If? Do you hope that the series will expand past the films and maybe into some of the Multiverse characters we saw in the latest Loki episode? Is Howard the Duck we see in the trailer the same Howard the Duck from Guardians of the Galaxy and possibly the same from the 1986 George Lucas produced Howard the Duck movie making Howard the actual first MCU Multiverse character? Let us know in the comments down below.
What If…? begins on Disney+ on August 11th
