We got to see the most briefest of peaks at the upcoming Eternals film in Marvel showing us their Phase 4 plans at the beginning of this month but now we have a proper look at the upcoming film with the first real teaser trailer having just been released.
For anyone who doesn’t know the Eternals are a little like the New Gods from DC (which is convenient as both were created by Jack Kirby who was a collaborator/creator with Stan Lee for many of the Marvel Universe). Descendants or creations of what is known in the Marvel Universe as Celestials, in the comics these were giant God like beings but within the MCU Celestials have had more of a small ‘g’ take with entities like Ego being the first entry but not the only.
The trailer that dropped is just a teaser so it definitely does not give a lot away outside of a timeline of how long the Eternals have been around (hint, it’s in the name) and a relative point that this film crosses with the rest of the MCU given that both Captain America and Iron Man no longer being around is mentioned in the trailer. We see snapshots of the Eternals throughout history including what we assume is their first arrival but mostly this is our first look at the characters including Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Angelina Jolie’s Thena.
So how does this line up with the comics? In publication the Eternals were originally created in 1976 in a limited series the Eternals had an update around 2006 with Neil Gaiman actually bringing their origin inline with the modern Marvel Universe, meaning that a lot of Eternals lore is actually somewhat more recent. BUT there are some theories we can wildly throw out there such as the Eternals sudden change to put themselves out into the world after the events of Endgame may be due to some sort of hand in those events – like perhaps the ruins of Titan we saw in Infinity War. With the film out before the end of the year, we can only hope the next trailer answers more questions.
You can check out the full teaser trailer below and tell us what you think? Are you looking forward to Eternals? Do you think that Thanos will share the same part heritage of his comics counterpart? Will Celestials like the Living Tribunal teased in the Loki series have a connection? Tell us in the comments down below.
Eternals is on track for an early November release for Australia (and possibly Disney+)
