Ok so this is going to be a lot to process with the new Space Jam movie trailer dropping overnight after many years in development. While there has been some recent controversy over certain character designs or appearances for the next film the first trailer shows off there might be a tiny bit more to discuss.
For those who don’t know the original Space Jam followed in the legacy of Who Framed Roger Rabbit style Animation + Live Action putting real life actors right next to animated stars, although in the case of Space Jam it was basketball legend Michael Jordan + Wayne Knight & Bill Murray next to Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. In short Aliens come to earth to take over the Toon-a-verse but Bugs Bunny convinces them they have to play a game of Basketball for it then kidnaps Michael Jordan to win (This also helped spawn the Looney Tunes Back in Action movie with Brendan Fraser)
Overnight we got the new trailer and while the Looney Tunes don’t exactly need continuity it’s pretty clear there will be no Danny Devito ‘Monstars’ this time with Lebron being sucked into a virtual world to play against an AI Rhodey/War Machine. Long story short is that Lebron’s son is kidnapped and playing Basketball is the only way to get him back but first he has to put together a team comprising of Bugs Bunny and if the list it to be believed Superman, Gandalf and the Iron Giant.
Does that make sense? No not really but does it need to? Probably not. But the insanity gets kicked way up after Kong, the Iron Giant, Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear and a ton of Hanna Barbera toons show up in the second half (Hanna Barbera was bought by Warner after the original Space Jam came out and did not start being absorbed until after 2006). But before you get too worried about substance over…. substance did we mention this also has a pretty big line up of creatives behind it including Ryan Cooglar (Black Panther), Spider-Man Homecoming’s Director of Photography, Editors from Godzilla King of Monsters and quite a few more.
You can check out the trailer below but what do you think? Are you looking forward to the new Space Jam? Will Don Cheadle pull a Harlem Globetrotter and pull out the ball saying ‘Boom! You looking for this?’? Do you also think that it needs more Bill Murray? Tell us in the comments down below.
