The Suicide Squad, or as most us have been thinking of it – James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. We have been pretty hyped for this release since news broke of James Gunn being picked up by DC to write and direct the sequel to the forgettable first film. While a movie about Supervillain’s as mercenaries might not be catnip to movie executives we have to say this might be shaping up to be the best DC film to date (big call we know).
Ok so it’s no great secret that the first Suicide Squad for the DCEU did not go down well. Dropping in 2016 while it had such promise on paper the expendable DC B-Lister squad did not quite deliver. And while it may have been responsible for giving us Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn to the joy of Cosplayers everywhere the film itself probably would have been on the receiving end of one of Waller’s neck explosives.
But with Gunn, a huge comic fan already, onboard for the film last year during the DC online event that happened in place of SDCC we got a taste for what kind of squad we were going to get. Announcing a HUGE cast with everyone from the returning Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn to The Polka-Dot Man and the Rat Catcher and then casting everyone from John Cena to a former Doctor Who only increased the hype. Not to mention that during production a spin-off TV show was greenlit based on John Cena’s character with James Gunn also writing/directing that too, that was a lot of hype without a trailer.
But overnight we got our first look at the new Squad in action with a red band trailer and it looks good. Heavy on the character interaction we can see some signature James Gunn work with a blend of humour through seeing a ragtag team mixing it up and he didn’t even need a talking tree this time. Not giving away all the secrets as we know the cast of the film is much MUCH bigger than what made it into the trailer we see Idris Elba’s Bloodshot, John Cena’s Peacemaker and most importantly Harley Quinn all getting decent amounts of screentime.
The trailer itself is pretty action packed but it isn’t until the very end of the trailer that we got a half second reveal that makes us clutch our copy of Brave and the Bold #28. While in the film we hear the world Kaiju that is absolutely Starro the Freakin’ Conqueror showing up, or at least one of his drones. Probably not the big bad of the film but with the Snyderverse fixated on Apokolips it’s good to see some other would-be conquerors from DC Comics making their way to film.
