Welcome to CosFriday on this very special PaxAus Friday! Today’s featured cosplayer is hot off her win at the Madman National Cosplay Competition.  Her cosplays are always incredibly detailed and absolutely perfect, welcomes VyeCos.

We were lucky enough to sit down with her for an hour to discuss everything cosplay.  Her face lights up when we started talking about favourite cosplays.

What’s your name & how old are you? Hi, I’m Vye and I’m 24 years old.

How long have you been cosplaying? I’ve been cosplaying for 12 years.  Half my life! Wow, that’s a long time.

What inspired you to start cosplaying? Well, my parents really.  My parents read in the paper that there was a Supanova convention coming up and suggested that we go.  They then suggested that I made a costume and I was like “yeah, okay”. I made a Pokemon costume – Weaville.  I told my friends and they also made a quick costume to go too. My parents drove us there, we got out of the car, and told us they would pick us up at 5 pm!

Thank goodness there are no photos!

I kept cosplaying because it was a good hobby at the time.  This was primarily with friends I had back home in Sydney. It’s funny, Sydney used to be the big cosplay place, but now that’s changing to Melbourne.

What was your First Cosplay? Aside from Weaville, the first one that really stands out to me would be the first time I entered MNCC and I did Takuto Tsunashi from Star Driver.

What is your most recent cosplay? Nero from Devil May Cry 5 [which won the MNCC! Go watch the sketch on her Instagram with the amazing Vamprea as Nico]

In 2011 I made his sword, and I really wanted to revisit the new version of the character design and make the new sword when the new game came out.

My favourite part is the jacket, which I made.  Most of the jacket is airbrushed.

[I asked her about the weathering on the jumper, she laughs].  The jumper I bought, and it was harder than it should have been.  It smells like paint and nothing went as planned but it but was worth it.  I bought it thinking it was acrylic fibres, but it wasn’t. So when I tried to burn it to weather, it didn’t work.  I had to fake the details.

Mostly everything else went right.

While doing the rehearsals on Saturday the sword broke in half, luckily no one noticed and I re-glued it.  On Sunday in the finals, another part snapped off, but no one noticed!

What cosplays are you currently working on? Cain from Trinity Blood and Link from Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? I really like a few cosplayers, my top pics would be – MsMajorSam, EmeraldlKing, and _tessu_

Who else do you want to cosplay? I don’t have any dream cosplays, I do them as I want to do them.  I’ll just see them and do them.

Tell us an odd fact about yourself! Ummm….. I’m self-taught in everything and I’m an all-rounder in skill set. I studied games, which means I focus more on game-related cosplays post-university.  I used to do more anime before then. I work in augmented and virtual reality development.
