CosFriday – I-Artemis-I

Happy CosFriday Everybody! It’s been a hard week we know but you made it, you are here! We are well into Con season with Supanova and MadFest already kicking off for the year so while you are planning your last minute Cosplay for your sooner than you thought Con take some inspiration from this week’s featured Cosplay and say Hi! to I-Artemis-I

What’s your name & how old are you? I’m Natalie and I’m almost 37 (so oooooold)

How long have you been cosplaying? 7 years

What inspired you to start cosplaying? I’ve always been pretty crafty but never knew cosplay was even a thing until I went to my first Supanova to meet my favourite author (Robin Hobb) and saw all these Final Fantasy and Sailor Moon cosplayers and my eyes were opened.

What was your First Cosplay? My first cosplay ever was Fang from Final Fantasy XIII. I wasn’t brave enough to sew though, so I bought the fabric parts, but made everything else – accessories, belts, and 2.6m long lance. The lance took me 5 months. I didn’t use any power tools; just knife, rasp & files and a plane. I basically whittled down a big chunk of wood slowly. was still popular back then, so I used it to help me with some of the details.

I didn’t realise until I went to my first convention (Brisbane Supanova 2011) that making a prop that detailed and that big and pretty was a big deal, because everyone who I’d seen on the internet did it too. My first MADE costume was my next one – Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender (which started off a theme for me haha).

He taught me a lot. After that, I got brave and made the fabric parts of Fang so I could be happy with it and call her all my own.

What is your most recent cosplay? My most recently made cosplay would be Kyoshi Mai from Avatar. We had a group of Kyoshi warriors and practised our fan dance for our skit. I had so much fun. Avatar costumes are fun and (relatively) comfortable.

My most recent competition costume would be Ganondorf (from Zelda: Twilight Princess). I slaved away for about 400 hours on him: leatherwork, foamwork, wooden weapon (still working with wood!), fancy wig, detailed clothing, face paint.

He was a big one to make. Me and my cosplay partner came second in the Australian WCS (world cosplay summit) preliminaries with him and Zelda. He put me in a cosplay coma for the rest of the year.

What cosplays are you currently working on? I’m currently working on 3 costumes:

Liu Bei from Dynasty Warriors 9 for the madman national cosplay comp with a friend. Dynasty Warriors costumes are so beautifully detailed and a challenge to make – I really love them. I’m almost done making a casual robe, and then I have to start the big costume with fancy cape and armour and pain.

Balthier from Final Fantasy XII. By working on I mean I have him planned, know how I’m going to make him and have half of the materials already, but haven’t actually started. He’s for a comp later in the year and will be really fun to sass around in.

Brienne from Game of Thrones. I’ve been saying I’m going to cosplay her for about 4-5 years. I’ve almost finished her chainmail, which means I can make clothes for her soon! but I haven’t started the armour. I love her though and can’t wait to be her.

Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? Ahhhh I have so many. I love cosplaying with my friends, especially my avatar family: Redscarf Cosplay, Elle Norton, Nicstar Flame, Riyukiba Cosplay (who is also my perpetual squire for armoured cosplays, poor bugger), Karate Trainwreck….basically anyone who cosplays avatar I love because they are avatar fam haha There are also people I really admire as crafters: Tessu, K, Major Sam, Henchwench, Kamui, J.Hart, gaming_goddess….honestly our community has so much talent I admire (and am also jealous of)

Who else do you want to cosplay? Next year is my “dream cosplays” year because I’ve been putting them off for so long to compete in competitions (that don’t allow them because they don’t meet the criteria).

Gimli (Lord of the Rings) because he’s been my favourite character since I was a kid. He’s me, and his costume is beautiful and when I started cosplaying I never thought I’d be able to make him. But now I think I can.

Boromir (Lord of the Rings). I never liked him in the books, but the movies made me understand the character better and his costume is BEAUTIFUL.

Plus Sean Bean Guan Yu (Dynasty Warriors). This guy is basically the God of War. He has a magnificent beard (i have a thing for beards when cosplaying), beautiful costume and kicks butt.

Tell us an odd fact about yourself! I went to a primary school that had only 13 children and was the only kid in my grade for about 3 years.
