Evolve returns to Perth, Deza-Con in Melbourne, PopCon in Ballarat, Assassins in Sydney and Symbiotes in Cinemas. All this and a lot more is happening to fill your weekend across Australia for this Week in Geek. Oh, and Unicorns.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

First up don’t forget that the Brickman Experience is still running at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast until the end of next week. Book your tickets to enjoy these huge LEGO displays by Australia’s only LEGO certified master builder and maybe stop by the official LEGO store (also at Dreamworld) on your way home.

Also, Westfield Garden City in Brisbane is still hosting a Pop-up Arcade and Sneaker Museum for the school holidays. It’s all 80s and 90s style with custom kicks while you play Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, DDR and some pinball all school holidays long.

Returning to Brisbane this week is the unauthorised Harry Potter Parody that is Potted Potter. Touring the world Potted Potter aims to condense down all 7 books into one stage show which you can catch in Brisbane until Sunday.

Wednesday is a mini-shoutout to the fan saved Lucifer with Season 3 hitting Netflix for Australia. Season 4 is in production now with a date incoming soon but with so many shows being saved by social media, this year bet you wished Twitter existed when Firefly was still on the air.

Thursday

In Cinemas this week choose between some YA drama in the Australian made Harmony: The Five Frequencies Saga or Spider-Verse Symbiotes with Sony’s MCU adjacent Venom. Expect our reviews for both later this week.

B-Movies Live is the latest from our friends at Kristian Fletcher Events, the group behind the Live Action Rocky Horror and cult classic screenings in Brisbane. For four nights only across October watch live stage re-enactments of classic B-movies like Death Race or this week’s titles – The Wasp Woman & Kingdom of the Spiders.

Friday

Friday on Netflix season 2 of the adult animated service Big Mouth drops it’s next 10 episodes. From creators from the Kroll Show and Family Guy this show boasts a large mixed bag of SNL US comedians and more.

Also on Friday, we would have to turn in our geek events card if we didn’t tell you that Freaky Friday is getting its 4th remake on the Disney Channel, this time being adapted into a full-on musical. No Jamie Lee Curtis this time but you can see it this Friday if you have Foxtel.

Oh Hi Mark. You might have seen the movie based on the film on Netflix or even watched it yourself via Tommy Wiseau’s YouTube before it was taken down but there is nothing better than seeing the worst film ever made with a room full of strangers. Enjoy something so bad it’s good and pick-up some tickets for the New Farm cinemas in Brisbane on Friday.

Fright Nights continues Friday at Movie World on the Gold Coast. This year it’s bigger than ever with horror-themed districts inside the park, multiple horror mazes and panic rooms plus of course all the rides. It is only happening for limited dates (including Saturday this week) throughout October so pick up your tickets (and fast passes) online.

On the Gold Coast, this Saturday the Carrara Markets turns into the Unicorn Festival all weekend long. Timed for the school holidays this event is everything Unicorn – Unicorn market stalls, unicorn makeovers, unicorn food and most importantly Unicorn Pony rides (we just added the pony in there to maintain their cover, we all know they are totally unicorns). It finishes on Sunday.

And lastly, for Saturday, can you quote more than 3 things from the Little Book of Calm? Have you had to eat scrambled eggs, with a comb, from a shoe? Do you know what happens before Half Ten?! Then you not only need to go to Black Books Trivia in Brisbane but you more than likely also work there. Get a ticket for you or book a table for you and your friends and enjoy all the dusty old wine you can drink.

Sunday

Need some terrible movies for your Sunday in Brisbane to wrap up your weekend? Try Netherworld for their Two Bit Movie Club and a double creature feature with the 1954 ant based film THEM! and the 1957 Attack of the Crab Monsters. It’s free but you will have to buy your own crab sticks.

And finally for Sunday in Brisbane, just for something a little different the Elizabeth Picture Theatre will be playing a screening of Vienna Philharmoniker performing Beethovens 9th Symphony. Why do we mention it? Coming into Christmas there is no better way to get psyched for your annual viewing of the best Christmas Movie, Die Hard then with the song from Die Hard. Yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. We stand firm on this point.
