The year was 1987, Games Workshop released the very first edition of a science fiction tabletop miniature game. The called it Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader. The eponymous Rogue Traders were enigmatic merchants spanning the length and breadth of the galaxy, having adventures and expanding the Imperium. Eventually these characters were relegated to the background while Space Marines became the most prolific representatives of the Emperor.
But all of that is about to change with the release of Kill Team: Rogue Trader. The boxed set contains two new kill teams as well as a double sided board and the necessary tokens for play.
What is Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team? Kill Team is a skirmish game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. There’s a brief rundown of the core set here. Note that you will need a copy of the Core Manual rules to use the Rogue Trader expansion.
The expansion pits Elucia Vhane and her remaining crew against the mutated horrors that have fallen victim to the dreaded Gellerpox. This game advances the current state of affairs in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where things look particularly grim for the Imperium.
As mentioned, the box has a pair of kill teams, terrain, and other cool stuff, but it also has codexes! You can bring the Elucidian Starstriders and Gellerpox Infected into your regular 40k armies. At last, you can play a Rogue Trader in games of Warhammer 40,000! Praise the Emperor! These would look great in a number of Imperium or Chaos armies.
As ever, the models are gorgeous. The Starstriders team are particularly characterful, blending baroque gear with deadly weaponry. It also features the best boy in all of Warhammer 40,000. If Nurgle mutants are more your thing, the Gellerpox infected are suitably disgusting creatures. While they look at home in any Nurgle force, they also have their own distinctive features.
Kill Team: Rogue Trader is available from September 15th.
