Happy CosFriday Everybody! Need some Steampunk inspiration as you head to the Steampunk Festival in Adelaide this weekend? The awesome Miss Mayhem from South Australia is here to do just that!
What’s your name & how old are you? My cosplay identity is Miss Mayhem but my birth name is Tamika. I am 25 years old.
How long have you been cosplaying? I am still relatively new to the cosplay world. My first cosplay was in 2015 so I have only been at it for a few years. Honestly I never would have expected it to become such an exciting and ongoing part of my life!
Since then cosplay has opened up my world to so many things. It has taught me new skills, made use of the skills I already had, helped me build friendships with like-minded people, shown me all the things conventions have to offer, given me a creative outlet and legitimised that it’s totally fine to embrace your passions and never lose the child within!
What inspired you to start cosplaying? I just LOVE costumes and design.
I first started getting pumped to cosplay (without knowing cosplay was even a thing) whilst playing Diablo 3 on my pc. I love fantasy and naturally fell in love with the many different garments my wizard wore. Like anyone else who also has their head in the clouds, I longed to be one with the fantasy before me. I adored her badass attitude, stunning robes and surreal abilities.
Although I had not been taught much sewing, my passion for it had lead me to learn more and more so I considered the possibility that I might actually be able to mimic my Diablo characters look. This was definitely the pivotal moment where my inspiration began.
What was your First Cosplay? My first cosplay ended up being Frost Queen Janna, a character from the popular online game ‘League of Legends’. She is a frost mage who again ignited my desire to bring her to life much like I felt with the character from Diablo.
This time I could see quite clearly the many ways I could actually create parts of her outfit and went off researching more methods online just to make sure! I don’t really know why I did it. I just felt as though I had to. Seeing adverts for an approaching convention I realised I even had a reason to wear it and a place to learn more.
What is your most recent cosplay? My most recent cosplay would be Enchantress from the Marvel comics. You are probably beginning to see a trend here. Yes I am all about mages and wizards it seems.
What cosplays are you currently working on? I am currently working on a few cosplays. The main ones being a Valkyrie Dragonair for a big pokemon group and also a cyber inspired skin of ‘Lotus’ a character from ‘Heroes Evolved’ (The mobile version of a game similar to League of Legends and Dota).
My cosplay ideas are forever changing depending on what I am most passionate about at the time but you can expect to see these soon as they are already in the works.
Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? Honestly, I don’t even know where to start.
Kamui Cosplay is my favourite international cosplayer I would say. But locally… there are honestly quite a few amazing women and a couple of stand out male cosplayers too that I just adore! So much talent It’s unbearable. But I’m not going to name them as much as I’m sure they would love the shout outs because that’s super embarrassing for me ! 😀
But also my girls ‘Lymphae Cosplay’ and ‘Pinto Pegasus cosplay and designs’ who constantly inspire me and I never would have met if it wasn’t for cosplay and the power of the internet!
Who else do you want to cosplay? EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING. I have a huge list including many gaming characters and other pop culture hits!
Tell us an odd fact about yourself! I think everything about me is pretty odd.
I suppose one thing that is particularly odd about me is that I find it hilarious when babies (or small children) and animals run. Every time I see a bird run I giggle or point and laugh. No one else seems to be particularly attached to this like I am. Running just looks funny.
Have you seen birds run? Their legs move like a little minecraft man who had too much coffee.
And don’t forget that it’s your last chance for submissions for our 2019 Charity Cosplay Calendar to raise money for BeyondBlue! If you are a Cosplayer, Cosplay Group or a Photographer with a dream, we would love to hear from you.
