GAMMA.CON returns to Canberra, Ettin Con and HoGS take over gaming in NSW and Tasmania and the Melbourne International Film Festival are just some of the things you have to look forward to happening across Australia for this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

On Wednesday GET TO DA CHOPPA as part of Event Cinemas In The House with a screening of Predator! The new Predator film is only a month away so what better way to prepare then with some classic Arnie. It’s playing across Queensland in Event Cinemas on the Gold Coast at Pacific Fair & Southport, CairnsIpswichTownsvilleSunshine Coast Maroochydore cinemas, ToowoombaMackay and Brisbane‘s Loganholme, Myer Centre, Chermside and Garden City Event Cinemas. And just a reminder every In The House this season is playing on Wednesday and Monday nights in case you want to start your weekend even earlier.

Also in cinema the Great Detective series at Brisbane‘s GOMA continues with a double feature starting with the feature film spin out of our favourite teenage Detective TV series, Veronica Mars and a film to make you uncomfortable about eating chicken with the skin on, Silence of the Lambs. Buy a ticket for one, or both online or at the box office this Wednesday night.

If you arcade skills are more refined than button mashing E.Honda’s or Chun-Li’s special moves than this Wednesday get to the 1-Up Arcade for the first of their weekly Street Fighter Meet-ups. The Arcade has recently been reshuffled so all eight of the Street Fighter series machines are side by side so if you want to test your mettle against Brisbane‘s best Street Fighter players this is where you need to be.

Thursday

Thursday sees the latest in the Mission Impossible franchise hit cinemas across Australia with Mission Impossible: Fallout. You can catch our full spoiler free review of the now 6th instalment in the franchise later this week.

Also in cinemas on Thursday the Elizabeth Picture Theatre the Studio Ghibli Festival continues with Pom Poko. Animated by Studio Ghibli Pom Poko is the tale of Raccoons banding together to fight back to save their homes from rapid urbanisation. See it this Thursday in Brisbane.

Friday

It’s a good thing that we are out of Dry July because Friday is International Beer Day! Whether you celebrate with hops, butter or ginger just make sure you do it responsibly.

Also on Friday, while not normally something we would give a shout out to on Foxtel if you have it you can watch the 1968 Jane Fonda Classic Barbarella airing on the movie greats channel. If you have never seen it before this is one of those iconic films which helped Sci-Fi films into the mainstream as astronaut Barbarella in the year 40,000 lands on the frozen planet Lythion, so maybe bring some popcorn.

Want to get out of the house on Friday? Hold the door and try some Game of Thrones themed trivia at GT’s Cafe in Brisbane. Booking is absolutely essential and cosplay is recommended with prizes for best dressed to go with those the team that takes out the trivia.

Also in Brisbane the Brightside is putting on a Magical Evening of Mischief this Friday. On entry you will be given a magical map to explore the Great Hall and Forbidden Forest while you enjoy potions from the Potion’s master behind the bar. This is a ticketed event so expect tickets to go fast. UPDATE: Ticket’s went fast, but you can still join the wait list in case more tickets become available.

Saturday

The new LEGO Hogwarts set leave you inspired for your own massive build but short on Bricks? BrickResales is having their 2nd event for 2018 on Brisbane’s South with a massive LEGO sale at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds. Pickup a set, some minifigs or just buy by weight and stock up this Saturday.

Ahead of National Science Week starting at the end of next week this Saturday at the Queensland Museum be part of the Brisbane Science Comedy Debate as they argue, ‘Is Love a Chemical?’. Tickets are now on sale online for a night of chemical based nerdery.

Sunday

Miss Veronica Mars on Wednesday for GOMA’s Great Detective series? You can make up for it with our other favourite Detective fresh from his case of the theft of the Pink Panther diamond in A Shot in the Dark. Watch Peter Sellers in his iconic role as Inspector Clouseau as he does his best to solve an intricate web of murder and blackmail by getting your tickets at the door or online for this showing in Brisbane.

2. New South Wales & ACT

The Reload Bar in Canberra is going Wakandan on Friday in support of World Day Against Human Trafficking with $2 from every Black Panther themed cocktails going to United Nations Trust Fund for Victims of Human Trafficking. Wakanda night is all about the music of Black Panther with special guests from Zimbabwe and Uganda alongside local talent from Sydney and Canberra. If you loved the music or just wanted a reason to wear your Wakandan style threads this is it.

You might of been to a Harry Potter Trivia Night before but you have probably never been to Harry Potter Trivia on the Big Screen like the Limelight Cinemas in Canberra this Friday. With all questions from the movie, pizza and giggle water (alcohol) available and all ticket proceeds going to [email protected] your Friday night plans are sorted.

Saturday

GAMMA.CON hits Canberra for a weekend of a weekend of Pop Culture goodness. With Cosplay competitions and Indie Game Developer showcases along with all the regular con goodness this is one of our favourite ongoing cons and it starts this Saturday.

If you are closer to Sydney and looking for something tabletop gaming related this Saturday head to Blackheath for Ettin Con. This twice yearly event is about all things gaming with roleplay, tabletop, card and video games all catered for this scratches all your gaming itches.

Jumping back to Canberra Neko Nation is the GAMMA.CON after-party event this Saturday night. Neko Nation is the largest travelling Anime Cosplay party and you can get tickets to both Neko Nation and GAMMA.CON with a GAMMA @Night ticket available when you buy your GAMMA.CON tickets.

Sunday

The 1989 Arcade Bar in Sydney is switching everything over to freeplay for a closed door Retro Arcade Club session this Sunday. This ticketed event is runs from midday til 4 PM is available to all ages lets you play the growing stable of Arcade machines at 1989 plus a few retro consoles too. 3. Victoria & Tasmania

Wednesday

Wednesday on the Room of Requirement is getting bigger with the Brisbane based Store of Requirement expanding to Melbourne. Open for the first time this Wednesday and then ongoing from there the store offers butter beers, chocolate frogs and more wizarding treats on top of all it’s Harry Potter’esque merch at the new Collingwood location.

Thursday

Thursday sees the latest in the Mission Impossible franchise hit cinemas across Australia with Mission Impossible: Fallout. You can catch our full spoiler free review of the now 6th instalment in the franchise later this week but if you are in Melbourne maybe make a special effort to go see this one on the IMAX screens, trust us.

Also in film and starting Thursday but running for the next 3 weeks in Melbourne is the Melbourne International Film Festival. Celebrating independent and local cinema the festival also has carve outs for Animation & Anime, Zombie/Supernatural films and new Virtual Reality storytelling sessions. If you know like we do that Zombies are allergic to foam then you probably want to pull out your Nerf arsenal this Saturday in Melbourne for the August HvZ match. Eye protection is mandatory and there is a FPS cap on blasters so make sure you read the rules before you attend.

Saturday as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival there is a special screening that caught our eye with the Regent Cinema putting on a screening of the Ryan Gosling ‘Drive’. Not quite your average screening as this will be backed by a collection of musicians from unique bands across Melbourne who will be performing hit songs from the movies stellar soundtrack to add that extra bit of atmosphere and a real one-off experience.

Jumping over to Hobart for tabletop gaming lovers the Hobart Winter Gamesfest (or HoGS) 2 day gaming event starts on Saturday. Now in it’s 8th year, it’s only a gold coin for entry for this lock in gaming event with a ton of games back to back and a full schedule available on the HoGS Winter Gamefest website.

And lastly for Hobart, did you miss out on AICon’s last intro to LARP session? Saturday is your chance again to learn the basics of LARP from swinging a sword to basic rules. It’s open to all TasPop events members but you can also join for only a $10 annual membership with more details available through the event page organisers.

National Science Week is only a week away but you can get a head start with Science Alive at the Adelaide Showgrounds this weekend. With a massive amount of science plus some Doctor Who Dalek’s on display this 2 day event has over 50 exhibitors for you to get your science on from this Saturday in Adelaide.

Also in Adelaide on Saturday it’s time for the Adelaide Roller Derby Grand Final with the Wild Hearses facing off the Salty Dolls for 3rd place before the main event of the Mile Die Club vs the Road Train Rollers. This is the last big event for the season and the best time to check it out before the next starts.

Sunday

Finishing off your weekend, the Game Obsession Expo is happening just outside of Adelaide in Mannum this Sunday. This local con is focused on all things gaming, pop culture and other obsessive hobbies (we don’t know what that means we can stop buying Funko Pops whenever we want) so come check it out on Sunday.

Sunday in Darwin you can do some good and see Dinosaurs at the same time when Deckchair Cinema outdoor cinemas present Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This fundraising movie session is to benefit the Greyhound Rehoming Association NT who rehome retired racing greyhounds.

5. Western Australia
