If you live in Adelaide then you could not have missed the sudden presence of AVCon, the annual Anime and Video Game Convention. The Adelaide CBD was suddenly populated by dozens of costumed anime and gaming fans. AVCon took place from Friday 20 July – Sunday 22 July at the Adelaide Convention Centre, and we went along to take in the event highlights.

Each year AVCon transforms the light-filled maze of the Convention Centre into a vibrant celebration of all things anime, gaming, cosplay, and pop culture. This year, Adelaide was lucky to enjoy a two-for-one festival weekend with Hybrid World, a tech and science conference, taking place in the same location and tying in nicely with the AVCon events.

There was so much to do and see at both events. AVCon had their bustling Artist Alley which featured an outstanding array of amazing local and visiting artists and creators exhibiting handmade goods and art. If you are looking for some kawaii original art, this was your destination!

The Indie Games Room and the Tabletop Gaming Room offered dedicated spaces for creators to exhibit their creations, and also gave punters a chance to discover and try their hand at games.

Panels were held throughout the weekend, with guests this year including American voice actors Spike Spencer and Neil Kaplan, where they discussed their experiences voicing some of the most well-known anime and cartoon shows out there!

However, the biggest focus of the weekend has to be Cosplay, with numerous panels, workshops and events taking place. The Cosplay guests included Major Sam Cosplay, Beke Cosplay, Vera Chimera and Knitemaya.

Each guest has their own style, specialisation and point of view which makes their panels a must-see for cosplays and fans. Hundreds of those who attended over the weekend were still there right up until the final hours, sticking around for the Cosplay completion, featuring some of the best up-and-coming Cosplayers locally, and from interstate.

Hybrid World, which was taking place right next door to the AVCon venue, but in it’s own dedicated space, looked towards the new frontiers of entertainment and technology. The event complimented AVCon with drone racing, combat robots, kids workshops and other STEM-focused free events for all-ages. Here’s hoping the event will re-emerge next year, bigger and better!
