Medieval Fairs and Anime Festivals, Murder and Mario Kart plus a chance to get flown to Brisbane with your NBA Jam skills are just some of the things happening across Australia along with everything on This Week in Geek.

Thursday

This Thursday in cinemas we have two remakes out. First, The Rock is trapped in a skyscraper fighting off terrorists in not Die Hard but the remake of the 1996 direct to video movie Skyscraper. Or for something a bit lighter a remake of the Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russel 80’s movie, Overboard.

Also in limited cinemas this Thursday is the general release of the Australia Sci-Fi production Occupation. If you want to find out some more about it check out our Creator Spotlight interview with writer/director Luke Sparke. It’s on in Event Cinemas Chermside in Brisbane.

Friday

Friday at Brisbane‘s GOMA the Great Detective film series continues for you to solve the murder of Mr. Body. The suspects Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mr Green, Miss Scarlet, Mrs White and Mrs Peacock for the 1985 all time classic murder mystery movie, Clue. Pickup tickets at the GOMA box office online or before the session. BYO Magnifying glasses and trilby caps.

On Friday as it’s still school holidays we will mention that if you have munchkins there is a ‘make your own comic‘ event in Brisbane‘s West End. Under the watch of Brisbane ‘Rose’ comics creator Cameron Davis this is how you play the long game to get your kids a job of Marvel so you can get free tickets to the Avengers 47 premiere.

Saturday

Starting Saturday and going across the weekend is the Sunshine Coast‘s biggest annual Medieval event, the Abbey Medieval Festival. If you are going for the day or going to camp for the weekend expect jousting, archery, feasts and all sorts of middle ages fair (you might even see a time machine).

If you fight Evil by moonlight, find Love by daylight and never run from a real fight then you will want to come to Netherworld’s 3rd Saturday morning cartoon session this Saturday in Brisbane. With a chill cartoon session to watch some Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura + trivia and even a sneaky bonus if you show up in your pyjamas, how else would you start your weekend?

In Brisbane if you want to combine your love of doing good with your skills at Mario Kart then register for the Cancer Council Super Mario Kart Tournament Fundraiser this Saturday. Get your ticket now to secure your space to win some awesome prizes, or you can just donate directly to the Cancer Council too.

By Wednesday Comic Conversation has already begun! This annual comic based event happens every year across multiple libraries around Sydney and surrounds for the next two weeks targeted towards encouraging and supporting local comic creators! In Sydney? Not getting enough opportunities to play Hearthstone? Wish you had more friends to have a casual game with? If you answered yes to all of these head to the Spawn Point Small Bar in Sydney this Wednesday night for the Hearth Fireside Gathering! Bring 3 different class decks for this double elimination tournament to win.

Looking for Group is a 3 day table top gaming event starting this Friday and running through to Sunday in Sydney. On top of national championship finals for Rummikub and Klask expect to see plenty of gaming demonstrations and indie table top game developers showing off their wares. Oh, and there is plenty of chances for you to game too.

It’s Friday the 13th! So you need a heaping helping of Horror in Sydney with an epic marathon of films at the Ritz Cinema in Sydney. Starting off with The Toxic Avenger and then jumping into Pumpkinhead + John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness before topping it all of with Killer Klowns from Outer Space! That’s a lot of Friday the 13th to have all at once.

Hoyt’s Entertainment Quarter is also getting into the swing of Friday the 13th with a host of in theme movies. For Friday only watch sessions of Monsters Inc, Goosebumps, Hocus Pocus, Scream and of course Friday the 13th. It’s part of Hoyts Rewind in Sydney.

Friday is your first chance to head to celebrate Hogwarts style at Hog Watts in Newcastle. Explore Diagon Alley, celebrate with other Hog Watts students in the great hall and then kick it Yule Ball style afterwards. Check out the full site for more details.

Saturday

Starting Saturday and running all weekend is Sydney’s largest annual Japanese Pop Culture Convention – SMASH! If you are a fan of Manga, Anime or anything Japanese flavoured in your Pop Culture this is THE event for Sydney which is going to be huge with pre-sale online tickets already sold out. Don’t worry, you can still get tickets at the door. See you soon Space Cowboy.

Follow SMASH with the official after-party with Neko Nation for Neko Nightly. Expect awesome J-Pop and K-Pop DJs, anime, gaming and famous free sushi from the Neko Nation cat girls. It’s happening in Sydney after SMASH on Saturday (make sure you take your SMASH tickets to get a discount at the door).

Sunday

The Penrith Collectormania Toy and Hobby Fair is on again this Sunday in Sydney. Whether you are looking for your missing mint in box Moss-Man figure or the Yellow Lion for Voltron, this massive Toy and Collectable event is your best chance.

Come on and Jam at the 1989 Arcade Bar in Sydney for a 2v2 NBA Jam Tournament for your chance to represent NSW as you are flown to Brisbane’s Netherworld for a State of Origin NBA Jam Tournament. Winners will receive flights and accommodation for the finals all you have to do is register your team and win on Sunday.

Not only can you pickup back issues from only $1 on top of plenty of independent vendors also being hosted both Saturday and Sunday in Melbourne, whether it’s comics, toys or collectables you are likely to find what you are missing here.

ReliefLAN is the biggest charity fundraising based LAN in Melbourne at it’s on this Saturday! Raising money for Homelessness the charity LAN has raised over 23k for various charities and you can help by gaming this weekend. Check the full site for WinterLAN 2018 details and to register.

Sunday

The travelling APCS Toy Show finds it’s way to Melbourne this Sunday. This Toy fair has a lot of vintage but also cards and action figures amongst a ton of stuff so you never know what you might find to fill that hole in your collection.

If you like your retro gaming to be more Amiga and C64 than Megadrive and NES then the Adelaide Retro Computing Group is meeting again for their monthly meet. Bring your pre-2001 system, come to check out whats on display or maybe pickup something for your own collection this Friday.

Time is fleeting and madness takes control in Adelaide for a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening to ring in your Friday the 13th. Screening at near midnight at the Capri Theatre this is more than just a screening of the film but an experience to be shared with others.

Saturday

Head to the Pop Club in Adelaide on Saturday with your Nintendo Switch and Splatoon for a Heaps Fresh Splatoon meetup. Only $5 for entry for a full day of casual gaming, this could be your way to represent Australia in the 2019 Splatoon World Cup at next year’s E3.

You know what is better than Laser Tag? A 12 hour long lock in session of Laser Tag happening this Saturday (through to Sunday) in Adelaide. Booking is essential so assemble your team carefully.

It’s Pinball & Arcade Night at the South Australia Pinball & Arcade with all the machines being set to Free Play this Saturday night. Tickets are limited but score yourself some to play as long as you like in Adelaide.
