You did it! You made it! We know you could, we didn’t want to start CosFriday without you and this week we are going to Perth. This week say Hi to a Cosplayer from the West Coast and meet Mercat Cosplay!
What’s your name & how old are you? Cara! But you can find me as Mercat Cosplay. I’m 26.
How long have you been cosplaying? I started in 2009 with an eBay Sailor Senshi costume, started making my own in 2010. I really only just started to create an online presence though.
What inspired you to start cosplaying? Going to the first Supanova in Perth with friends in 2008 I saw people dressed up and was in awe of how perfect they were. Before that I was dressing up whenever I could, but didn’t know I would be so enamored with the details and accuracy.
What was your First Cosplay? My very first cosplay I made was a Vaporeon Gijinka. I still wonder how I made it back then when I barely knew how to thread my grandma’s ancient sewing machine (I used it for years actually!) We didn’t have worbla, patterns, large fabric selection or fancy wigs back then either, so it hasn’t aged well but I will always be super proud of it because I made my own patterns and did everything without knowing what I was doing.
What is your most recent cosplay? I’ve just made two versions of Special Week from Uma Musume Pretty Derby, I still want to make more of her outfits. I love this show so much.
What cosplays are you currently working on? I’m currently making Star Guardian Ahri from League of Legends for the final round of Evolve’s ACE competition. (I have a problem I can’t stop making LoL cosplays).
Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? I can rattle off so many but here’s some Perthies I admire for their unique talents – Giorgia Costumes for making everything so flattering, Kirilee Cosplay for cosplaying outside of the meta, AstroKerrie Cosplay for making hybrids out of LARP and cosplay, Mary Bear Cosplay for sewing mostly by hand, Heads-Up Cosplay for making the impossible into real life and Terranous for showing that age is no barrier.
Who else do you want to cosplay? My next plan is Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn. It became my favourite game, I really relate to her and it has a lot of elements I want to try! My dream cosplay is a version of Black Lotus from the Accel World OVA.
Tell us an odd fact about yourself! When I was 3 I was playing in the rubbish (why child??) and cut my finger on a tin can. It wasn’t very deep or severe and didn’t need stitches. Well it cut the tendon and I can’t actually bend the end knuckle of my right hand ring finger. It’s basically a useless appendage now but I am grateful it’s still attached to me. I also can’t wear contacts.
And don’t forget that submissions are now open for our 2019 Charity Cosplay Calendar to raise money for BeyondBlue! If you are a Cosplayer, Cosplay Group or a Photographer with a dream, we would love to hear from you.
