1. Queensland

Wednesday

In The House continues this Wednesday say hello to our little friend with Scarface and/or watch Bill Paxton mow down some Xenomorphs in the action sequel, Aliens. It’s playing across Queensland in Event Cinemas on the Gold Coast at Pacific Fair & Southport, Cairns, Ipswich, Townsville, Sunshine Coast Maroochydore cinemas, Toowoomba, Mackay and Brisbane‘s Loganholme, Myer Centre, Chermside and Garden City Event Cinemas. And just a reminder every In The House this season is playing on Wednesday and Monday nights in case you want to start your weekend even earlier.

Also at limited Event Cinemas continuing on Wednesday is the anime film festival Outta the Box celebrating everything awesome in anime. With Akira starting off the season right this week moves onto the iconic, Spirited Away. It’s playing at Event Cinemas Chermside, Garden City and Myer Centre in Brisbane.

Thursday

Still not over Infinity War? Thursday in cinemas try something a bit lighter from the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp. The first one was one of our favourite MCU films so we are definitely looking forward to the sequel and you can look forward to our non-spoiler review later this week.

Also in cinemas from Thursday if you need something non-Marvel, you can see the biopic of one of the original fandoms and author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley. Check your local cinemas for screening details.

In eSports this Thursday you can watch for the first time in Australia the League of Legends Rift Rivals competition in Sydney. While it is live in the State Theatre in Sydney you can watch it in selected Event Cinemas in QLD so check your local listing to see if you are one of them.

Friday

Start your weekend by testing your nerd mettle as you go Mjolnir vs Batarang and Kyptonite vs Infinity Gem for Marvel vs DC Trivia. Hosted by GT’s Cafe in Brisbane this Friday night booking is absolutely essential.

Pinball Wizards will want to be at The Pinball Grotto on the Gold Coast this Friday night for their 3 strike competition. Get there before 7 PM to get your entry to compete for the July pot as well as finding some new people to show off your pinball skills.

Back in Brisbane the new The Greatest Detective series starts at GOMA playing everything from Murder on the Orient Express to The Maltese Falcon and everything in between. This Friday see Peter Sellers first outing in a pre-Pink Panther Detective Clouseau for A Shot in the Dark. Tickets are available at the GOMA box office or online.

Saturday

This Saturday in Brisbane you can check out some of the awesome local indie comic talent right in the heart of the Queen Street Mall as ComicStreet returns for another year. This one day only event lets local creators (like Sodaville Comics from this week’s creator spotlight) take their comics to the people instead of waiting for the people to come to the comics. It’s free, and it’s on Saturday.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… if you just got chills then you definitely need to know that the Queensland Symphony Orchestra this Saturday will be performing not once but twice as the musical background to a screening of Star Wars Episode IV. With both a 2 PM afternoon session and a 7:30 PM you should sell your speeder to get some tickets, so you can join them in Brisbane and learn the ways of the force.

And finally it’s all 80s at the Metro Arts Cinema in Brisbane this Saturday with our friends at Kristian Fletcher Events putting on a triple feature for the start of the school holidays. See The Karate Kid, Stand by Me and Labyrinth (or all 3), you don’t even need to be on school holidays to see them.

Sunday

And Happy World Video Game Day! It’s Sunday, the perfect time to become one with the couch and enjoy some old or new games all day this Sunday.

Nothing to play at home? Head to Netherworld in Brisbane on Sunday for their Mario Kart 64 Tournament kicking off from midday. They will also be giving away a Nintendo Switch on the day and you don’t even need to 1st place to win it as everyone who plays on the day will go into the raffle.

Put on your best school formal wear as Brisbane‘s Netherworld goes “Prom” on Sunday to raise money for Happy Tails Animal Rescue Inc. with Pinball Prom. With a Karma Keg and 3 Strike competition get your tickets now (or stop in any time this month and play ‘Magic Castle’ as everything raised by that machine this month will also be donated to the charity)

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

Also at limited Event Cinemas continuing on Wednesday is the anime film festival Outta the Box celebrating everything awesome in anime. With Akira starting off the season right this week moves onto the iconic, Spirited Away. It’s playing at Sydney‘s Macquarie, Burwood and George St Event Cinemas.

In eSport’s this Wednesday (and Thursday) you can watch for the first time in Australia the League of Legends Rift Rivals competition in Sydney. Being streamed to Event Cinema sessions in other states for the final day, you can watch it live at the State Theatre in Sydney.

Happy World Chocolate Day Everyone! You didn’t really need an excuse but in case anyone asks this one is on us.

Go medieval in Sydney for Winterfest 2018. Jousting and Archery to Food and Festivities are just some of the things at the Hawkesbury Showground this weekend, you can even win some prizes if you get into the swing with some period dress of your own. It’s happening happening this Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday is also your second chance to see the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra tour as it returns for an encore performance after the success of the first tour. Celebrating the 15 years of Kingdom Hearts you can get tickets for the only Sydney (and only Australia) performance this Saturday night at the Sydney Opera House.

And lastly, ain’t no party like a Pokemon Party this Saturday at Spawn Point in Sydney. Re-download Pokemon Go and have some themed drinks as you sign ups for a friendly Pokemon Stadium tournament this Saturday night and the Cosplay Competition in your best Misty, Ash or Team Rocket attire.

Wednesday and Thursday (well technically it started Tuesday) Tech Games Fest kicked off at Melbourne‘s Chisholm Frankston Campus. What is TGF? It is a Interactive Games Festival with everything from Cosplay, Gaming, eSports and Tabletop to more Industry Networking, ethical Hacking and Video Game talk. It’s open to the public and entirely free!

Have you been to the GG-EZ, Melbourne‘s only eSports Bar yet? Why not check it out this Wednesday for their Not-So-EZ weekly trivia. It happens every week covering everything from TV to games to comics and more for you to win some great prizes.

Starting Friday and running through to Sunday is the largest table/board gaming annual convention in Shepparton with Shepparcon. Shepparcon aims to deliver a solid weekend of gaming for local players to time in with the school holidays. If you are in the area make sure you support this local event so it can come back next year bigger than ever.

Saturday

Club Cosplay, the only dedicated Cosplay nightclub in Melbourne goes Nerdlesque on Saturday with The League of Nerdlesque in a mixture of Burlesque and comedy celebrating everything Pop Culture. Tickets are available right now for one performance only this Saturday.

LANSlide is Melbourne‘s largest LAN Party happening every school holidays with this weekend being time for it again. Happening on Saturday and Sunday these events have attracted up to 300 gamers with Tournaments on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PUBG, Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Rocket League and more planned!

And lastly still with gaming the Australian eSports Federation DOTA 2 finals are happening this Saturday and Sunday at Melbourne University’s Union Theatre. There will even be a cosplay comp with some of our favourite cosplayers including Astrokerrie and casual gaming booths setup. Get your tickets via Eventbrite.

Perth‘s largest Toy and Collectable market the Nexus Toy Fair is on again this Saturday. This quarterly event has everything from Star Wars to the Simpsons so if you are looking for that mint 80’s original Moss-Man action figure this is your best place to look.

Respawn is going full Fortnite at The Court in Perth this Saturday. Your gaming prowess will earn you bar cards to score drinks at this 18+ event with free entry before 10 PM. Oh, and there is also a Cosplay Drag show on the night too.
