World Arduino Day and special Infinity War screenings with live Q&A sessions with directors Joe and Anthony Russo already make this a pretty full week without PressPlay in Perth & Adelaide and Gladestone PopCon. Let us help you out planning your busy weekend with everything happening across Australia this Week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

GOMA’s curious affection program continues this week with the 1990 classic from Hellraiser creator Clive Barker, Nightbreed. Playing at Brisbane‘s GOMA cinema this Wednesday get tickets online or at the door.

Thursday

If you are not afraid of the Red Shell then Checkpoint eSports are looking for you in their Thursday night Mario Kart Tournament. The tournament kicks off at 7 PM on the Gold Coast with a bracket elimination with Mario Kart 8 on the big screen.

Friday

Have you checked out the Free Space VR arcade in Brisbane yet? This Friday thanks to Brisbane Shenanigans you can for half price (sorta). Brisbane’s newest VR venue will have all it’s VR spaces reserved for Brisbane Shenanigans members and all you have to do is book through the event site to be one of them.

Also in gaming on Friday the 1-Up Arcade in Brisbane is having it’s second ever Super Street Fighter IV Tournament, if you missed out last time this is your chance. Registration closes at 6:30 PM but even if you miss out you can still enjoy the Freeplay arcade including every version of Street Fighter from Street Fighter II up.

Do you know your Marvel Universe 616 from your 1610? Can you name every big screen movie that Batman appeared in? Then you should go to Superhero Trivia on the Gold Coast this Friday. Open to students and non-students this 3 rounds of general knowledge and 3 rounds of Superhero trivia will help fund the Student Guild Volunteer Trip to Thailand.

Saturday

Planning to see Infinity War again on Saturday? Event Cinemas have a VERY special session this week with the screening being accompanied by a live Q&A with directors, the Russo Brothers. Happening at the same time in Event Cinemas across the country you can be a part of it in Brisbane at Event Cinemas Indooroopilly.

Saturday morning cartoons return to Netherworld with breakfast and classic Ninja Turtles in Brisbane. If two hours of classic TMNT with some breakfast and trivia sounds awesome to you then head to Netherworld this Saturday.

Saturday is Pop-Con! Returning after a great first year this regional con deserves all your support if you are in the Gladstone area. Also supported by the local council come check out the local vendors, creators and even cosplayers this Saturday.

Catch a double feature of GOMAs curious affection with the Studio Ghibli, My Neighbour Toroto followed by Netflix live action Okja. See one or see both on the big screen at Brisbane‘s GOMA cinema on Saturday.

Running both Saturday and Sunday this weekend in Brisbane enjoy all things model train at the Brisbane Model Train Show. With over 45 different train layouts there is also over 30 traders in case you feel inspired to get your model train on.

The 1-Up Arcade turns One this Saturday! The largest freeplay arcade in Australia has been growing over the last year and wants you to join them this Saturday for music and giveaways on top of the many original arcades in the arcade (including the home of our own Indie Arcade machine). It’s happening in Brisbane.

And lastly for those in Townsville, want to support MagnetiCon? Then book a table with your friends for Scary Spooky Adult Only Trivia Night this Saturday night. Your best scary cosplay is not required but it can win you a prize too.

Always looking for like minded people to game with? Well Played is a platform to find like-minded gamers who you want to play with. This Saturday The Mooseheads Pub in Canberra is holding it’s Annual Cosplay Party! It’s open season with whatever Cosplay you want from Cartoon and Video Games to Sci-Fi and Anime, basically any Cosplay you want which also get you free entry.

Opening this week and running through to October at Melbourne‘s ACMI in Federation Square you can enjoy this exhibition celebrating one of the earliest fandoms with Lewis Carrols Alice in Wonderland. Appearing over 40 times on the big screen since 1903 this exhibition celebrates all of them.

Thursday

Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. is still happening in Melbourne and this Thursday next door at the Midtown Diner you can join for the official S.T.A.T.I.O.N. trivia night. It’s free to play but booking is recommended as you play for some great Marvel prizes.

Friday

The BETA Bar goes full Pixar and Disney this Friday in Melbourne. Dress as your favourite Pixar or Disney Prince, Princess or other character for cheap entry and once you are in the door show your driving skills in the Mario Kart tournament to win all the prizes!

Also this Saturday is World Arduino Day and in Lalor north of Melbourne the Lalor Library wants you to learn more about these awesome little devices for your maker projects. If you have an Ardiuno and a Laptop you have everything you need to join but check the Eventbrite for the full details.

Combine your love of Game of Thrones with helping to support the Australian Women’s Fistball (it’s like Volleyball) this Saturday in Melbourne for Game of Thrones Trivia. All proceeds go towards helping the Women’s Team, The Possums, head to the World Championships in Austria in July (you can even get there a little earlier to check out the sport).

OzComicCon maybe gone but on Thursday the team behind it bring you PressPlay, the one night stand of Cons! This Thursday the Australian Championships of Cosplay as part of OzComicCon will continue for Adelaide in addition to some trivia, gaming and geek related music for this 18+ event.

Have you always wanted to own your own personal Pinball machine? Pooraka Pinball Repairs is having a come and play session for you to check out their current machines and get some hands on time. It’s happening on Thursday in Adelaide.

Also in AdelaideQuest Time!” Is where Improv meets the D20 tabletop campaign rules for this Fantasy/Improv comedy show. Playing for only a single show each week until the end of June you can see it first on Thursday.

Friday

Our favourite film festival In The House continues at the GU Filmhouse in Adelaide with classic (and final) Brandon Lee film, The Crow. This is for one session only as part of the Event Cinema’s In The House series so make sure you pickup your tickets early.

Are you an expert when it comes to all things Pixar? The Port Adelaide Commercial Hotel is hosting Disney Pixar trivia for you to show off your encyclopedic knowledge of everything from the Incredibles to Ratatouille when you bring your friends along this Friday.

Also in Adelaide this Friday the Adelaide Retro Computing Group is having their May meet. Even if you don’t have something to bring and show you can still come along and check out some of the gaming and computing from days gone by with Amiga, Atari and Commodore are just some of things you can expect to see.

This Saturday at Perth‘s Grand Cinema is open for a Interactive movie screening of the Monty Python classic, The Holy Grail. With door prizes, interactive events and even a showbag full of props to enjoy the movie this event can only get better knowing it also raising money for Oxfam Australia.
