Intel Extreme Masters in Sydney, Free Comic Book Day everywhere and win a massive Ultimate Collectors edition as part of Star Wars Day in Melbourne. This and much more is happening across the country this week in Geek.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

GOMA’s curious affection program continues this week with a double feature of fish related films with Creature from the Black Lagoon and the more recent ‘The Lure’. Both are playing this Wednesday in Brisbane, get tickets online or at the door.

Thursday

For your May the 4th Eve you can get your Art on with Netherworld in Brisbane playing host for Art2-D2: A Star Wars Art Show starting Thursday and running all weekend. With pieces from over 20 outer rim Artists all pieces of work will be available for sale too in case you need something for back on the moisture farm.

Friday

May the 4th be with you today for the most holy of Star Wars themed dates.

Looking for a wretched hive of scum and villany? Brisbane‘s Netherworld is celebrating Star Wars Day with a weekend long Star Wars event starting on Friday. Not only is there some special Star Wars themed food on offer but if you also complete the Star Wars challenge you can get one of the rare Ewok pins special for the event.

If you have Foxtel then you can get into May the 4th with three hours of Star Wars animation with the LEGO Star Wars and a Star Wars: Rebels marathon this Friday from 3 PM AEST.

Friday you can also get some more classics at Brisbane‘s GOMA curious affections film series with the unrivalled Rocky Horror Picture Show shown in it’s original format followed by the director’s cut of Nightbreed. See one or both back to back when you get tickets at the door or at the online box office.

And lastly on the Gold Coast this weekend is Furry Down Under the annual Queensland based Furry convention. So if you are wandering around the Gold Coast this weekend, don’t freak out.

Saturday

Happy Free Comic Book Day everybody! This annual event happens on the first Saturday of May every year to give those who might not be into comics a good excuse to get some free books and maybe pickup some more to support their Local Comic Book Shop. You should check out your local store for what they are doing but if you don’t have one here are a few we can mention:

  • Comic Empire in Brisbane‘s Woolloongabba will have onsite HALO grading on top of everything you can expect from FCBD
  • Ace Comics in Brisbane’s Annerley will be supporting FCBD and offering discounts on a number of things in store
  • Comics Etc in Brisbane CBD have a bunch of FCBD comics plus some secret extras that you are just going to have to line up for to see
  • And finally (and sadly) FCBD is the last day of trade for Secret Identity Comics also in Brisbane CBD so if you are in the area make sure you say goodbye to a great store.

Saturday is also Starlight Day if you are near an EB Games or Zing you may see more than a few Cosplayers raising money to help out the Starlight foundation. In Brisbane‘s King George Square Cosplayers United will even be doing an event with a lot of Cosplay volunteers to raise much needed coin for the charity.

Running both Saturday and Sunday near Boonah the La Bunjurga Medieval Festival is a completely free event for all ages. Held at a Vineyard with 4 different reenactment groups this may combine your love of wine with your love of heavy metal medieval combat.

Sunday

Looking for that hard to find trading card to complete your set or an obscure collectable it might be at the APCS Toy and Hobby Fair. This travelling Collectable Fair is on this Sunday in Brisbane before heading south to help you find your own personal Maltese Falcon/Ark of the Covenant/Orb.

Alternatively if you collecting needs are more 2×4 brick than a complete set of TOPPS Batman Returns then BrickResales long weekend event on Sunday might be more your speed. Preloved LEGO Parts, Sets and Minifigures are just some of the things you can pickup to help you finish your LEGO masterpiece in Brisbane.

And wrapping up your weekend back at Netherworld again for Two Bit Movie Club with some awesome 1950’s sci-fi with Robby the Robot and Leslie Nielson in 1956’s Forbidden Planet, followed by This Island Earth. They are playing this Sunday in Brisbane.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

It’s Intel Extreme Masters week in Sydney this weekend so to celebrate Spawn Point are having an IEM afterparty every night this week. So if you have had a hard day of enjoying all the eSports you can handle kick back or if you didn’t manage to score the tickets you want head there for the many viewing parties this week.

Starlight Day is this Friday but you can start Fundraising early at the Reload Bar in Canberra for their Star Power Reloaded event on Wednesday. Tickets are available at local EB Games with all proceeds from the event benefiting the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Thursday

Instead of watching the Prequels for Star Wars Day eve this Thursday you can get into a Star Wars state of mind with Star Wars Trivia at the Guild in Canberra. With only limited tickets remaining make sure you get yours right now.

Starting Thursday and running through to Sunday in Glen Innes is the Australian Celtic Festival. This annual festival celebrates all things Celtic for you to jump back in time, you can still get tickets and camp site locations for this one on the official site plus the full event calendar.

Friday

Also in Canberra The Durham is holding Star Wars trivia on Star Wars Day. Win prizes not only for knowing the difference between a DLT-20 and GR-75 but for your awesome Star Wars Cosplay.

Friday is the official start to the Intel Extreme Masters in Sydney. This 3 day event is the largest eSports event in Australia with Pro Teams coming from across the world to play through to Sunday. For more details and to get your tickets head to the official IEM site.

This annual event happens on the first Saturday of May every year to give those who might not be into comics a good excuse to get some free books and maybe pickup some more to support their Local Comic Book Shop. You should check out your local store for what they are doing but if you don’t have one here are a few we can mention:

  • The Comic Shop in Sydney will be supporting Free Comic Book Day with free comics to get you hooked plus some big discounts on trade paperbacks (we recommend picking up the Fraction Hawkeye series if you missed him in Infinity War).
  • Canberra’ites can go to Dee’s Comics for their FCBD fix and plenty of free comics on top of some competitions and giveaways for your cosplay.
  • Impact Comics also in Canberra would love to see you in your cosplay so they can give you some free comics too (but you don’t have to wear the cosplay to get the comics).
  • Kinokuniya Sydney will do FCBD in Sydney with Free Comic Book Day Showbags (while they last).
  • And finally of course Kings Comics in Sydney are supporting Free Comic Book Day with free comics but this year in store they also have Tom Taylor, Nicola Scott, Andrew Constant, Paul Mason and Dean Rankine and on top of the trivia and cosplay there are also 5 golden tickets hidden in the DC and Marvel Gold Books, score one of those and you get a full set of all 50 FCBD comics (which is good because there are always some that just go quick).

Also this Saturday is Central Coast Comicon. This one day event happening in Gosford has everything you can want for a regional con and can only get better with your support so if you are in the area make sure you get your cosplay finished in time for this weekend.

Sunday

New South Wales’ largest Toy and Hobby Collectable Market, Collectormania is on again. This is your best bet to find that rare Castle Greyskull or 30th Anniversary Boba Fett and it’s on this Sunday in Sydney.

If you love a Zine or an Indie comic the MCA 2018 Zine Fair is on this Sunday in Sydney. Held at the Museum of Contemporary Art this free event showcases over 100 creators of everything small press as it is presented with the Sydney Writers’ Festival.

And finally in Windsor the Hawkesbury/Hills Area Roller Derby will be running a games day event this Sunday. No not roller derby but board games to raise money to support the team so they can keep doing what they do.

3. Victoria & Tasmania

Wednesday + Thursday

The LEGO Discovery Centre is holding a Star Wars themed Adult Night to celebrate May the 4th this Friday in Melbourne. As if that wasn’t enough reason to go, every Adult attending goes in the draw to win a $1299 LEGO Millennium Falcon. Oh yes, the extremely hard to get Ultimate Collectors Edition Millennium Falcon.

  • All Star Comics in Melbourne will be supporting FCBD with not only Free Comics but an Artist alley and raising money for the local childrens hospital.
  • Also in Melbourne Minotaur Entertainment will also let you pickup some Free Comic Book Day comics.
  • Comics’R’Us are supporting Free Comic Book Day in BOTH of their stores to make it easier for you to get some great comics in Melbourne.
  • And finally for Melbourne both Classic Comics and Collectors Edge Comics are also supporting FCBD.

Also on Saturday in Ballarat, The Wizards Book Fair might not be free comic book day but there are still plenty of comics in addition a ton of books for you to pickup. If you are looking for some hard to find golden or silver age this might be your best bet.

And starting Sunday and running into Monday is the Gumeracha Medieval Fair happening just outside of Adelaide. Now in it’s 11th year this medieval event has everything from Vikings to Knights on horseback for this event that broke 15,000 attendees last year.

5. Western Australia

Wednesday

Shattered World is the 5th major event for LARPing in Dwellingup south of Perth. This 5 day event is held at the 12 acres Dare Adventures is a purpose built outdoor adventure camp starting Wednesday and running through to Sunday.
