Pluto Demoted Day, Tank Girl in Brisbane, Evolve 2017 in Perth and less than a week until the Marvel Exhibition in Brisbane finishes up. Here is everything happening across Australia this week.

1. Queensland

Wednesday

If you are in Brisbane and find yourself itching for some Pop Culture Con action head to the University of Queensland for their first ever Pop Culture Convention. It might not be the most creative name but it’s on Wednesday and Thursday this week (and it’s free)!

There is less than 2 weeks to go for the GOMA Marvel Exhibition in Brisbane which means the MCU movie screenings are also wrapping up soon! This Wednesday night you can catch The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

Do you know your Wingardium LeviOsa from your Wingardium LevioSA? Then head to Fortitude Valley’s Beach Burrito in Brisbane this Wednesday night for Hogwards School of Witchcraft & Trivary! Booking is absolutely essential, so round up your house and get a table to show off your Harry Potter trivia skills.

And lastly for Wednesday in Brisbane, TANK GIRL IS AT THE METRO ARTS! TANK GIRL!!!!! If you have never seen this movie then you need to cancel your plans because it’s just pure awesome.

Thursday

Unhappy Pluto Demoted Day everybody 🙁 We don’t know how you celebrate this.. maybe head to your local Observatory and say ‘Hi’ to the loneliest non-planet in the solar system.

He said he would be back, but he left out the part about it being in 3D. Hitting cinemas around the country you can go back and watch the movie that made the Terminator into the franchise it is with Terminator 2 remastered and in 3D. It’s playing pretty much everywhere so checkout your local favourite cinema for session times.

Want to know some of the games on the local indie scene? Head to Netherworld in Brisbane this Thursday for their Indie Game Developer Night! Entry is free and it kicks off from 5pm.

And lastly on Thursday for anyone who loves everything Anime, Madman’s Studio Ghibli Festival starts from the 24th of August until the 20th of September. Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and 21 other films are playing at selected cinemas in every state across the country! With so many participating cinemas and sessions for the next month it might be best to find your favourite local cinema and checkout the session times so you dont miss a single film!

Friday

Starting Friday and going until Sunday the Queensland Tree Climbing Championships are on in Brisbane‘s North. Yes, this is a real thing and you can pick up tickets (and enter) now!

The first rule about Niche230 festival at the Gold Coast Pacific Fair Event Cinemas is you don’t talk about Niche230. At least it is this Friday with Fight Club being the next in it’s series, tickets are still available but there is only one session so make sure you pick-up tickets early!

Also in cinemas on Friday but in Brisbane for anyone who knows there can be only one can catch some classic Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery in The Highlander! It’s on this Friday at the New Farm Cinemas.

And lastly (for movies) across the state at Event Cinemas who are participating for In The House this Friday’s movie is a double feature for Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2. There is only the one chance to see this so pick out your best yellow tracksuit and grab your tickets.

If you splurged for Amazon Prime so you could watch American Gods (it was sooo good!) then this Friday you can watch the latest incarnation of THE TICK! We have seen a preview of this, it’s really good too!

Saturday

Happy International Dog Day AND International Cosplay Day Everybody! So why not combine the two and help your Dog Cosplay!

Saturday night you will want to be at the 1-Up Arcade in Brisbane as DJ Sheep plays as backing track to the in house Street Fighter Tournament. Entry into the tournament is included with the entry arcade and a $100 cash prize + 1-Up Trophy is up for grabs, make sure you get there and register by 6pm so you don’t miss out!

Sunday

This Sunday Brisbane’s largest single Retro Gaming Market is at Cafe de SOYT. This one is only held a few times a year and for the first time it’s going to be at a new venue. So if you are hunting down that original Sonic + Console to play it on, this is for you.

And also on Sunday after you finish at the GOMA Marvel Exhibition in Brisbane (that finishes next weekend! Aahhhh!!!) catch Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. Just like on Wednesday, grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

Evolve is back for 2017! And it’s on this Saturday! It’s on in Perth‘s Town Hall and it’s for one day only. With special cosplay guests, panels, workshops and pop culture vendors it’s just how you want to be spending your Saturday.

Also on Saturday and Sunday but in Balingup (250km from Perth) the Balingup Medieval Carnivale is happening all weekend. It’s heading into it’s 21st year with re-enactors from jesters to knights to minstrels, the Friday night feast might have sold out but there is still heaps to see!
