This week we catch up with Melbourne comic creator Mike Speakman (Carmen) for a quick chat about his newest project Space Copz, an all-ages comic featuring galactic heroes, brain-control breakfast cereal, and killer zombie children.
What are you playing, reading or watching right now? I’m currently in between two games at the moment, Crash Bandicoot (nostalgia overload!) and Life is Strange (such an amazing story – almost finished!). I’m reading Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski’s autobiography. Nergal is from a Polish black metal band called Behemoth. Truly interesting read! As for television: Game of Thrones (isn’t everyone?!), Animal Kingdom, Assassination Classroom.
Who or what is Space Copz? Why is it important? Space Copz is an all-ages science fiction comic series following the journey of Sgt Alpha Omega and Beta Boy. I have to admit that the importance of this project originally started purely for my own benefit. I was in between projects and had just been formally diagnosed with anxiety. Life felt heavy and being able to write such fun, uplifting stories just helped bring me forward into a much better state of mind. The importance of Space Copz has evolved since then. I use the project to create stories that are for EVERYONE. These stories are to be enjoyed by anyone who wishes to have a read. Like the owl says, “Reading is a hoot!”
Apart from your comics what should everyone be looking out for in local Australian Pop Culture? Just Australian comics as a collective!
Every state continues to release and showcase comic gold. You’ve got Metcop Wonderland by Katie Marx (Tasmania) and Mel Rowsell (WA), Ryan Lindsay killing it in Canberra, Louie Joyce in NSW, yourself and Jana Hoffmann in SA. Just to name a few. It’s incredible. Everyone is constantly lifting their game and honing their skills. But I’ll stir the pot and say that Victorian comics are number 1, but I may be a tad bias.
Major prediction for Pop Culture 12 months from now? Everyone crying over the series finale of Game of Thrones. Haha!
Best last thing you ate? Left over roast pork. Because the only thing better than a Sunday roast is leftovers.
And that’s 5! You can find Mike on Facebook, and you can read the Space Copz webcomic series for free online right now! Keep an eye out for the impending Kickstarter campaign if you would like to grab a copy for your book shelve!
