CosFriday – A.K.Wirru

Happy CosFriday everybody! Last week you loved the Overwatch World Cup Official Cosplayer and GammaCon special guest, so we decided to bring you another one! If you haven’t already, meet AmenoKitarou Wirru

What’s your name & how old are you? A.K.WIRRU, 28

How long have you been cosplaying? I started cosplaying since 2006, and making costumes since 2008. But in hindsight I probably was interested in cosplay since I was 5 years old. I grew up with heaps of anime and I’d always want to get all the merchandise. Not the figurines either. But the equipment, weapon toys and props.

In 2006, 2007 I mainly put cosplays together by buying bits and pieces and gathering things from my closet for a rough resemblance. 2008 was when I started caring about making costumes and accuracy.

What inspired you to start cosplaying? The performance side attracted me to give it a go. I saw cosplay skits and wanted to play my favourite characters on stage too.

What was your First Cosplay? Shinji Ikari from Evangelion EVA was my favourite anime growing up (that’s pretty messed up isn’t it), and Shinji in the movie plays a classical Cello piece. So I learned the Cello and performed it.

What is your most recent cosplay? A transforming Venusaur I designed from Pokemon I love designing Pokemon gijinka. A rule I made for myself is that all my gijinka must transform into the actual Pokemon. It started in 2014 with my Cloyster. Since then I’ve done one Pokemon a year.

What cosplays are you currently working on? Bahamut from Final Fantasy X – my 2017 craftsmanship, patience and pain tolerance challenge haha. So far I’ve spent 6 months hand tooling leather for it.

Bakugo from Boku no Hero Academia, and Mutsunokami from Touken Ranbu – my two impulse costumes for August. I’ll be finishing them for SMASH 2017!

Who are your favourite cosplayers in the community? K & Aly – they were my idols and role models when I first started cosplay. I really admire their versatility, make up skills and general professionalism.

Vera Chimera – Vera Chimera and I have been friends for a decade. Since we’ve met she’s gotten super popular but always stayed down to earth.

Henchwench – you guys probably know all about her already lol. She is so much fun to be around. She has really filthy humour and I LOVE it. And of course her craftsmanship, both sewing and armour (too many people forget Henchwench sews), is a standard that everyone should aspire to.

Who else do you want to cosplay? I want to design transforming gijinka of all three Gen 1 Legendary Birds. Hopefully for November this year.

Tell us an odd fact about yourself! I like to sing along to movie soundtracks and add disgusting high opera harmonies. My daily walk to and from the train station involves me screeching into the sky while getting weird looks from the neighbourhood.
