Way before you could take your Nintendo Switch on the train or pressed X to call Jason we had ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books as the OG of decision tree game play.
Super popular in the 1980s each book would have multiple branching decision points at the end of each section of the book telling you to go to page x or page y depending on the choice you made. And now they are back… on Netflix.
Revealed overnight Netflix is debuting 2 choose your own adventure style kids shows that allows the audience to select a path they want to take in the store. The first, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, being released today with a second (unrelated) adventure, Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile, being made available next month.
Decision tree adventures aren’t new with the move from game books to interactive storytelling normally being in the territory of gaming consoles and PCs but this is the first time we have seen it on TV in a long time since those VCR based games in the 90s.
If this goes well the options here for Netflix are endless with a number of properties such as Supermassive’s new PlayLink title which also uses a phone (like the Netflix offering) to control coming to mind.
Puss in Books is available now on Netflix with The Maybe Pile being available on July 14 for Australia.
