GammaCon, Multipasses and comics is the name of the game this weekend. From Canberra to Mackay to your couch with Netflix. You don’t need to be in the major cities for something awesome to be happening and we want to tell you about it (or even let you tell us).

1. Queensland

Wednesday

First up, across all states Project Eden is hitting iTunes and Google Play this Wednesday! Don’t know Project Eden? You might have missed our Creator Spotlight with the writer/director team!

The 1-Up Arcade is having it’s first ever tournament this Wednesday in Brisbane. The tournament starts at 2 PM and the highest score at 9 PM wins! What game is it? Well, it’s called the Cold cup for a reason… but this will be an ongoing tournament every Wednesday played on the featured Arcade of the Week.

The Brisbane GOMA MCU movie marathons continue as part of their awesome Marvel Exhibition with The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron both on this Wednesday, grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

Thursday

Atomic Blonde hits Cinemas across Australia from today! Based on the Oni comic you can check out our full review when out on Thursday but spoilers, it was pretty awesome.

Friday

Starting Friday and running all the way to Sunday Lifeline is having it’s Annual Bookfest in Ipswich. Why do we mention it? Well you know that series of books you really want but it’s pretty pricey to pick them up all in one go? Problem solved.

Rick and Morty got you pumped up this week! Keep it Schwifty into the weekend and head to the Rick & Morty House Party this Friday night at the Flamin` Galah in Brisbane. Do you need a ticket to enter? You bet you do! Don’t be a Jerry, be Mr Bulldops

If you love nothing more than saying Multi-pass then you probably already know this month is the 20th anniversary of one of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time – The Fifth Element! And better yet across Australia Madman are teaming up with select cinemas to hold screenings of the 4K remastered edition. So where can you see it on Friday in Queensland?

  • Limelight Ipswich and Tuggeranong
  • New Farm Cinemas

Or if you prefer something more Anime related Event Cinemas at Brisbane‘s Myer Centre is having their next film as part of their OuttaTheBox festival with Akira. If you have never seen Akira before, just cancel your Friday night plans before you have to hand over your geek cred card.

Also on Friday SexPo Brisbane starts and runs through until Sunday, why do we mention it? Well we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that it includes a Sexy Cosplay comp but more importantly it is being judged in Brisbane by Katyuska Moonfox from July in our 2017 Charity Calendar for SmartPups!

And lastly, if you just want to stay in Season 3 of Voltron hits Netflix. Haven’t watched Season 1 or 2 yet? You should, it’s awesome and it’s on this Friday night!

Saturday

Happy International Beer Day Everybody! The 3rd best day of the year after International Chicken Wing Day and Penguin Awareness Day. Enjoy your Saturday but be responsible and make sure you get home safe. There is a lot of stuff we want you to enjoy.

Heading to Mackay? You must be going to Sugar City Con as it’s on this Saturday! And while you are there say Hi! to Nichameleon from our 2017 charity calendar who is also one of the special Cosplay guests this Saturday.

And on Saturday if you missed the Friday night Fifth Element screenings (or they were just sold out) you can always get to the following in Queensland:

Sunday

Are you going for the set in collecting exclusive pins from Netherworld? Then you need to head there on Sunday to get your Daytona pin with the Netherworld Speedway happening this week. Finals will be separated up into Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced tracks with prizes on offer but you need a ticket to go so grab some advance tickets now.

Delayed from it’s previous screening a few weeks ago you can finally watch Labyrinth on the big screen at the Metro Arts cinema in Brisbane this Sunday. There is only a few sessions to choose from but they are all happening on Sunday so don’t put it off.

And lastly on Sunday after you revisit the GOMA Marvel Exhibition in Brisbane, relive our introduction to MCU’s Spidey with Captain America Civil War. Grab some tickets online or at the box office that opens an hour prior to the screenings.

2. New South Wales & ACT

Wednesday

Starting Wednesday (well technically before Wednesday) and running until the 8th of October if you are in Sydney you can check out the International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes as it tours and is currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum. And yes, there is even a mystery to solve so the game, most definitely, is afoot.

Thursday

Is Goldeneye 64 the best game ever or the worst? If you have skills that extend past just picking up the golden gun then you can play in the 1989 Arcade Bar in Sydney for their four play tournament this Thursday. This is the 3rd in the series which is leading up to the championship! Get along and play or watch it via Twitch (which we will also host).

Friday

If medieval fairs are more to your liking then you may want to look into Radburne War as it happens this Friday and runs until Sunday in Dubbo. For more details about the event and camping details check out the event page.

GammaCon kicks off this Saturday (and continues to Sunday) in Canberra! Never been? Cosplay, Board and Video Games, all the Pop Culture’ly goodness.. It’s pretty awesome and it’s on this weekend!

And when GammaCon is over for the night but you dont want to go home but you can’t stay there head to the Reload Bar in Canberra for Gamma @Night the GammaCon after/mid-way party! This 18+ event is ticketed but you can pickup some at the door (or online).

You know what Ol’ Jack Burton always says? No? Well make sure you are at the 1989 Bar Arcade in Sydney on Sunday for Alan Smithee’s 2nd Cult Film Club because he is going to be playing Big Trouble in Little China. Trust us. It’s all in the reflexes.

3. Victoria & Tasmania

Wednesday

Fans of terrible (terrible) B-Movies may want to clear their Wednesday night schedule in Melbourne to be at the Loop Project Space & Bar for Reject Cinema. This week? Kung Fu! Mysterious Islands! Zombies! Yes it is probably as bad as it sounds, and that is why you love it.

Also in Melbourne on Wednesday night, if you got your practice in last week Bartronica kicks off their Super Mario Kart Tournament. It’s 2 player split screen with your entry fee also getting you a free pint while you play to win a Bartronica loot box.

And if you want to stretch your mind and not your fingers also in Melbourne you can drop into Island Somewhere as they make sure you are looked after with fine Wednesday night trivia, this week – The Office (US Edition, feel free to debate which one is better in the comments below).

Thursday

Feeling sociable? Bartronica is playing host to Melbourne Gaymer on Thursday night for their Rainbow social. Meet some new like-minded gaming folk to challenge on the arcades or perhaps on the impromptu trivia. It happens Thursday night in Melbourne.

Friday

If you love nothing more than saying Multi-pass then you probably already know this month is the 20th anniversary of one of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time – The Fifth Element! And better yet across Australia Madman are teaming up with select cinemas to hold screenings of the 4K remastered edition. So where can you see it on Friday in Victoria?

Also on Friday, but at a different point in Time and Space.. look its a bit complicated and is a bit timey whimey. Trust us, go to the Beta Bar on Friday night in Melbourne. Make sure you wear your best Fez as the Doctor Who Party kicks off at the Hawthorn Hotel.

The Chancery Lane Gallery in Adelaide is playing host on Thursday night to a showcase of South Australian and interstate fantasy artists with a collection of fantastical, mythological and other-worldly art both hand drawn and digital.

Friday

Anyone who scoffs at flat earthers and knows it really sits on the back of a giant turtle in Adelaide is probably going to want to head to Nullus Anxietas, Australia’s largest annual discworld convention as it kicks off on Friday and runs through to Sunday.

The only thing better than watching Kill Bill 1 or Kill Bill 2 is watching both of them, back to back like you can this Friday night in Darwin. It’s hapening as part of the Cult Classics and you can pickup tickets for sessions online now!

Are you a lady, who loves comics, in Adelaide? Then you should join the Adelaide Ladies Comic Club as they meet this Sunday (and every month). This month’s comic? I Kill Giants by Superman writer Joe Kelly. Oh and you can also help out the chosen charity each month too!

Do you find love by daylight? Fight evil by moonlight? You probably know the one called Sailor Moon and will want to be a the International Sailor Moon Day (Cocktails) High Tea. Tickets are available to this all ages event but obviously cocktails are 18+ as it happens in Perth. UPDATE: This event is now unfortunately cancelled, anyone who had previously purchased a ticket should either have been contacted for a refund or contact the event organisers if not.

Sunday

Blazing Saddles might just be the best Mel Brookes movie ever (only because we can’t decide between that and Spaceballs) but you don’t need to take our word for it because the Backlot Studios in Perth is having a special screening this Sunday. Backlot screenings tend to sell out pretty fast so we would suggest jumping on their site and grabbing some tickets as soon as you can!
